Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares Speaks at Regent University
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (March 30, 2022) – Today, the Honorable Jason Miyares, Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia, gave an inspiring address to Regent students, faculty, and staff on campus in Virginia Beach. Attorney General Miyares shared reflections on navigating the demands of public service as a follower of Christ.
“It’s an honor to be back at Regent,” the Attorney General remarked. “Being in public service is an intersection of law and policy and politics. I am reminded often of Romans 12:18: ‘If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.’”
“Our society is the most connected and yet the most disconnected that we have ever been. 50% of Americans don’t know the name of their next-door neighbor,” he added. “Ronald Reagan once said, ‘How can we love our country and not love our countrymen?’ There is a spiritual deficit. There is a God-shaped hole that has not been addressed.”
He noted the importance of human connection, compassion, and outreach. “As followers of Christ, we are called to love one another. We must engage the community and the world. Our values aren’t defined by what society says.”
Attorney General Miyares reminded listeners, “The God of the universe has a passion and unwavering desire for relationship with you. That’s an amazing realization. It changed my life.” He added, “You can walk a million miles away from God but it only takes one step to get back.”
In 2021, Miyares was elected Attorney General and became the first Hispanic-American to hold statewide office in Virginia. From 2015 to 2021, Miyares served in the House of Delegates. Recognized as a “Champion of Free Enterprise” by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, then-Delegate Miyares consistently opposed higher taxes and regulations that make it hard for small business owners to expand and thrive. Prior to his service in the House of Delegates, Miyares served as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach.
Miyares attended elementary and high school in Virginia Beach. He holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from James Madison University and is a graduate of the College of William & Mary School of Law, where he served on the Honor Council. He is the Past President of Cape Henry Rotary where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, Past Chairman of the Hampton Roads Young Republicans, Founding Member of the Hampton Roads Federalist Society, Member of the Virginia Beach Bar Association, and a Member of Galilee Episcopal Church. He and his wife Page Atkinson Miyares have three daughters and a very lovable Golden Retriever, Buckley.
