The Internship
The four years of coursework, practica,
clinical competency probes and the comprehensive exam all
point toward the pre-doctoral internship. This culminating
experience will place you in the role of a professional
psychologist, under supervision, for a full year. Our students
have been very successful in garnering competitive internship
placements, even before the advent of our APA accreditation.
The internship process is lengthy, but is designed to match
students with internships that will meet their needs and
interests, while also satisfying the needs of the internship
site. In addition, the 2,000 hours earned while on internship
completes the educational training required to pursue licensure
as a clinical psychologist. You should be aware that while
there are some approved internship sites available within
the Hampton Roads area (the general vicinity of the school),
the internship match process is very selective and it is
likely you will need to move to an internship site that
will allow you to meet the objectives listed above.
Students select possible internship sites
and apply to each site for which they hope to be considered.
Sites review the applications and determine which applicants
they will interview. The purpose of the interview is for
the student and the site to determine how interested they
are in one another. The students rank the sites and the
sites rank the students. Both ranks are submitted to The
Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers
(APPIC). APPIC operates a match service that tries to match
internship applicants with a suitable internship site.
If no match is reached, applicants may utilize the APPIC
Clearinghouse, where they can apply for a site that remains
unfilled after the initial match service has concluded.
Some 700 internship sites exist across
the country, and our placement rate for internship is typically
very high (92 percent for 2005). Examples of where students
have completed their internships include:
- Danielsen Institute, Boston University,
Boston, Mass.
- Emerge Ministries, Akron, Ohio
- Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Center, Neuropsych/Psych
Assessment, Grand Rapids, Mich.
- St. Mary's Children and Family Services, Syosset, N.Y.
- Kern County Psych Internship Consortium, Fresno, Calif.
- Village for Family and Children, Hartford, Conn.
- National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md.
- University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, Mephis,
Tenn.
