Regent’s Licensure Programs – Compliance with state licensure requirements

Before you begin your journey to licensure with us, please check your individual state below to confirm if the program you are interested in complies with your state’s licensure requirements or complies with the requirements of the state in which you intend to work.

Doctoral Psychology

Note: The doctoral psychology degree requires completion of a competitively selected internship. State licensure laws may vary regarding internship requirements. Most American Psychological Association (APA) accredited internships will meet requirements. However, supervisors professional experience hours may vary (1500-2000) across internships, thus when applying for internships students should ensure pursuit of internships meeting applicable state requirements.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The CMHC counseling program is accredited by CACREP.

  • Colorado

  • Connecticut

    1. use elective coursework to take a course in human sexuality.
    2. In addition, one must complete an 8-hour laws and rules course, a 2-hour prevention of medical errors course from a board approved provider, and within 6 months of licensure complete a 3-hour course on HIV and AIDS from a board approved provider and 2 hour domestic violence course from a board approved provider.

    1. document 300 hours of supervised client contact under a licensed supervisor (Regent requires 40 in Practicum and 120 in each Internship for a total of 280 hours).
  • Idaho

  • Illinois
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with Illinois’ licensure requirements, except the ethics course needs to include Illinois law.
  • Indiana

    1. complete an advanced internship of 300 hours (above and beyond the 700 hours through Practicum and Internships) and have at least 100 hours of face-to-face supervision.

    1. consider taking coursework in Human Sexuality to meet the requirement of a course in Human Development that includes sexuality.
  • New Hampshire
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with New Hampshire’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. complete a minimum of one academic year of full-time graduate study in mental health counseling in residence at the institution granting the degree.
  • New Jersey
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with New Jersey’s licensure requirements.
  • New Mexico
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with New Mexico’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. use elective coursework to take an additional twelve semester hours/ eighteen quarter hours in specialized clinical studies. The following topics are creditable: psychodynamics and psychotherapy, case study, treatment planning, diagnosis, psychopharmacology, clinical supervision, advanced training. Recommended courses in Regent University Counseling programs include treatment planning course and psychopharmacology course.
  • New York
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with New York’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. complete coursework or training, approved by the Education Department, in the identification and reporting of child abuse.
  • North Carolina
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with North Carolina’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. pass a jurisprudence exam.
  • North Dakota
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with North Dakota’s licensure requirements.
  • Ohio
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with Ohio’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. complete 20 semester hours (or the equivalent 30 semester hours) in the following mental health related content areas:
      • Clinical psychopathology/ personality/ abnormal behavior
      • Evaluation of mental disorders
      • Diagnosis of mental disorders
      • Intervention, prevention, and treatmentRecommended elective courses in Regent University Counseling programs include treatment planning course and psychopharmacology course.The Board will accept license-qualifying coursework in the above areas to be completed post-master.
  • Oklahoma
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with Oklahoma’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. complete two courses in the appraisal/ assessment and theories and methods categories.
  • Oregon
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with Oregon’s licensure requirements.
  • Pennsylvania
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with Pennsylvania’s licensure requirements.
  • Rhode Island
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with Rhode Island’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. document 12 semester hours of supervised practicum and one calendar year of a supervised internship consisting of 20 hours per week in counseling.
  • South Carolina
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with South Carolina’s licensure requirements. More »NOTE: students will need to document a supervised practicum of at least 150 hours and if the students intend to treat serious mental disorders, they should have an additional 600 hour internship. The practicum should also address the treatment of serious mental disorders.
  • South Dakota
    Regent University’s CMHC counseling program complies with South Dakota’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. use elective coursework to take coursework in Psychopharmacology and Treatment Planning.
  • Tennessee

    2. document 300 hours of their Practicum or Internship in a clinical setting.
  • Texas

    NOTE: The Texas Board will not credit practicums that are primarily focused on assessment.
  • Utah

  • Vermont

    1. use elective coursework to take coursework in Treatment Planning.
  • Virginia

    1. Complete study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours including gifted and talented children and special-needs children in the regular classroom.

    1. complete 3 credit hours of Testing, Measurements and Research in School Counseling
    2. document clinical experience of 700 hours in an elementary or secondary setting; or clinical experience of 350 hours at each level for dual certification.

    1. Complete coursework in understanding and interpreting the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) and other academic test results to students, teachers, and parents
    2. Complete coursework in federal, state, municipal, and school laws and regulations
    3. Complete coursework in college counseling and use of college and other post-secondary resource materials.

    1. have coursework in guidance administration and consulting.Note:   Students must also have two years of successful professional experience in teaching or a related human service field except as provided through provisions and need to hold a valid educator’s professional license or be pursuing licensure as a teacher by engaging in a course of study that will result in licensure within seven years of initial employment as a school counselor.
  • Ohio
    Regent University’s School Counseling program complies with Ohio’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. complete a one-year induction under the supervision of a licensed school counselor OR have two years of successful teaching experience under a standard, provisional or professional teaching certificate or license.A temporary school counselor license may be issued to an individual who holds a currently valid license to practice as a counselor from the Ohio counselor and social worker board who is enrolled in an approved school counselor preparation program or may be issued to an individual who holds a currently valid standard teaching certificate or professional teaching license, who is enrolled in an approved school counselor preparation programs, and who demonstrates an understanding of school counseling coursework.
  • Oklahoma
    Regent University’s School Counseling program complies with Oklahoma’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. complete two years of previous related experience
    2. completion of a two semester hour course in the education of the exceptional child.
      Note:   Students will also need regency credit/experience.
  • Oregon
    Regent University’s School Counseling program complies with Oregon’s licensure requirements provided that students:
    1. show evidence of knowledge of laws prohibiting discrimination in Oregon.NOTE:  Also, students will need two academic years of experience as a full-time licensed teacher in a public, private, charter, or otherwise licensed school.
  • Pennsylvania

  • Rhode Island

    1. complete a Human Relations course and a South Dakota Indian studies workshop.
    2. Students should also take Theories of Human Sexuality.

    1. without teaching experience have a one-semester long orientation experience in a school as an early part of the preparation program.  The orientation experience must be structured to provide observation, participation in, and analysis of classroom instruction.
  • Texas

Marriage, Couple & Family Counseling

The MCF Counseling program is accredited by CACREP. It is not accredited by COAMFTE.
