Students who are in the dissertation phase of their doctoral degree are eligible for loans when they take at least one credit hour.
This applies to students in the following programs:
As you enter this phase of your degree, please be sure to contact the Registrar’s Office so they can properly update their records as they will be reporting enrollment statuses to the National Student Clearinghouse in order to update the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). This database is used by lenders to determine a student’s last date of attendance. Once a student falls below the half-time minimum to receive a loan, or have a loan deferred, the six-month grace period prior to repayment begins. Properly notifying the Registrar’s Office of your status as a doctoral dissertation student will help prevent improper reporting of your enrollment status.
In order to be considered half-time (loan eligible) when not in your dissertation phase, you must maintain at least three credit hours.
