Regent's Master of Education in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed for individuals who have a desire to work with children and/or adults who are learning English as a second or foreign language. Courses emphasize TESOL methodology, linguistics, intercultural/cross-cultural education, second language acquisition, literacy instruction and assessing student achievement. Individuals pursuing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) approved TESOL Program – PreK-12 ESL Endorsement Track must be licensed classroom teachers; however, a teaching license is not needed for individuals that wish to work with adult populations and plan to pursue the TESOL Program – Adult Track. Individuals pursuing the Master's in TESOL may consider positions in both domestic and international settings.

Master's in TESOL Highlights

Curriculum: Master's in TESOL Adult Education/Collegiate Track or PreK-12 ESL Endorsement Track
Length: 33 credit hours. May be completed in as little as 24 months.
Format: Eight-week courses delivered entirely face-to-face or entirely online. Students may begin the program in August, October, January, March, May or July.
Results: Master of Education in TESOL degree. TESOL PreK-12 Track leads to ESL Endorsement.

Master's in TESOL graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and application of theory, principles, and practices pertaining to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Areas addressed include: linguistics, TESOL methodology, first and second language acquisition, literacy instruction, cultural understanding, and current trends and best practices in the field.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply skills and strategies in alignment with the WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design) and TESOL English language proficiency standards and best practices for instruction and assessment of  ELLs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the influence of socio-cultural and linguistic factors in the instruction of ELLs.
  • Demonstrate skills in the teaching of reading for ELLs, specifically addressing the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of integration of faith and learning as encapsulated in the School of Education four areas of seeking wisdom, seeking knowledge, serving others, and edifying others.
