EXPERIENCE HANDS-ON LEARNING IN THE BIRTHPLACE OF CLASSICAL RHETORIC.

For Credit Priority Application Deadline December 1, 2026

General Application Deadline January 1, 2027.

Experience Greece’s cultural heritage, ancient wonders, historic sites, savory cuisine, olive trees scattered on rugged hills, and turquoise sea. The School of Communication & the Arts’ (SCA) summer study program in Greece offers you the opportunity to join Dr. David Impellizzeri, associate professor of rhetoric, for a unique eight-day study tour experience related to the tradition of ancient Greek rhetoric with travel to Athens, Corinth, Mycenae, Thessaloniki, and the island of Rhodes.

This 3-credit course, offered at the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Doctoral levels, examines the rhetorical philosophies of Isocrates, Plato, and Aristotle and the great orations of Pericles, Gorgias, and Demosthenes. You’ll also study the works of leading rhetoric teachers of the Hellenistic and Roman periods, like Theon and Libanius. Finally, the course explores the influence of classical rhetoric on the intellectual and civic world of the Roman empire, which served as the cultural backdrop of much of the New Testament, including the writing and ministry of the Apostle Paul.

Attendees will visit historic sites and landmarks such as:

  • Athenian Acropolis, Agora, and Mars Hill
  • National Archaeological Museum
  • Panathenaic Olympic Stadium
  • Ancient Corinth & Acrocorinth
  • Lindos
  • Thessaloniki & sites relevant to the Apostle Paul’s missionary journeys
  • Aristotle’s birthplace (Stagira)
  • Acropolis of ancient Rhodes
  • Rhodes beaches

The trip is offered to all Regent students; however, family members and friends interested in the cultural experience may attend the trip without registering for the course, if space is available. Students taking the course for credit have priority in the application approval. Priority application and deposit payment deadlines are December 1st, 2026.

Monastiraki Square with the Acropolis in the background, Athens

This Ancient Greek Rhetoric seminar will take place during the summer semester May 10 – July 24, 2027 with eight days of required study abroad time in Greece from May 24th – June 1st, 2027.

This course entails academic study of rhetorical philosophy/theory, historic speeches, and rhetorical pedagogy (which can improve your own public speaking today). We will seek to gain further understanding of the influence of rhetoric upon Hellenistic and Roman intellectual, cultural, and civic life for its own sake and as the backdrop for the New Testament world and the development of the early Christian church.

At the graduate level, this course will equip future professional scholars with enhanced disciplinary knowledge of the art of rhetoric and provide resources for enhancing one’s professional practice of rhetorical communication in civic life and the marketplace. For undergraduates, this course will expand your intellectual horizons, provide further preparation for graduate school and for civic life and the marketplace, and/or open up an exciting new dimension for understanding the rich heritage of Western culture and the early and ancient Christian church.

Undergraduate: COMM 485 Special Topic: Ancient Greek Rhetoric

Graduate: COM 685 Seminar: Ancient Greek Rhetoric

Doctoral: COM 785 Doctoral Seminar: Ancient Greek Rhetoric

You will not be able to register for any of these courses as you would normally. After you submit your application and pay the Greece Program Fee, Abigail Beck, the Greece Program Manager, will send the list of students to Advising to register them in the correct class as a group.

Tuition rate

All graduate/doctoral students must pay the SCA tuition rate, which might be different from other Regent schools. Check with the Business Office. Regent undergraduate students will pay their normal tuition rate.
