Shaping Tomorrow’s Utilities

Shaping Tomorrow’s Utilities

Mark Carroll | 2026

Abstract

Shaping Tomorrow’s Utilities is a 10-episode podcast series focused on helping water and wastewater utility leaders think beyond short-term pressures and make stronger decisions for the long term. Utilities are being asked to manage aging infrastructure, rising uncertainty, climate volatility, financial strain, and growing public expectations, all while operating within planning and budget cycles that often prioritize immediate needs over long-range stewardship. This project explores that tension and offers a practical response.

At its core, the podcast is about helping leaders move from a reactive mindset to a more future-ready one. Rather than treating foresight as prediction, the series presents it as a disciplined way to notice change earlier, test assumptions, explore multiple plausible futures, and make better decisions before problems become crises. Across the episodes, listeners are introduced to practical concepts such as weak-signal detection, scenario thinking, adaptive pathways, anticipatory governance, and futures literacy, all translated into language and examples that fit the realities of utility leadership.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Utilities is not just about understanding foresight in theory; it is about using it in boardrooms, budget meetings, capital planning discussions, and everyday leadership decisions. The goal is to help utility leaders build habits and routines that strengthen resilience, improve stewardship, protect affordability, and support long-term public value. In a sector where decisions made today can shape communities for generations, this project invites leaders to govern with greater clarity, preparedness, and purpose.

Discovering the Leader Within: Moving with the Right Intentions to Shape Your Leadership Legacy

Discovering the Leader Within: Moving with the Right Intentions to Shape Your Leadership Legacy

Leslie Owens Brown | 2026

Abstract

As leaders, we each have a legacy, intentional or not, and that legacy should not be taken lightly. This manuscript offers an introspective and extrospective journey towards discovering the leader within oneself, while also providing insight into issues leaders encounter, in which the legacy they are creating can impact others when their behavior and actions are not shaped with the right intentions by way of moral principles, strategic activities, resources, and tools that enhance their knowledge, skills, and capacities.

Drawing on more than twenty years of leadership experience, workplace studies, and research, the objective of this manuscript is to offer actionable approaches to help readers examine the leader within themselves and prepare them to answer the question, ‘What will your leadership legacy be?’ A leadership legacy is not built on titles or awards, but on the impact of leaders’ behavior and actions after they leave the organization. Employees want effective leaders who are authentic, empathetic, transparent, and accountable. Leaders who possess those qualities receive greater employee engagement in return.

While leaders aspire to leave an impactful, positive legacy, not every leader will. For those who will, leading with your ‘why’ and maintaining an ethical framework are crucial for building a lasting leadership legacy. The manuscript concludes by revisiting the question, ‘What will your leadership legacy be?’ Whatever the answer, keep in mind that a leadership legacy requires intentionality and a clear purpose, leaving people and the organization better off because of the choices leaders make. The actions and words of leaders today are what their employees and others will remember tomorrow, so it is important that those moments, small or not, are brought forward with intention and true purpose to echo beyond one’s immediate influence.

Blueprint for L.O.V.E. Learning Opportunities in Volatile Environments

Blueprint for L.O.V.E. Learning Opportunities in Volatile Environments

Latonya Bradford | 2026

Abstract

In Blueprint for L.O.V.E.: Learning Opportunities in Volatile Environments, Dr. Latonya R. Bradford presents more than a doctoral final project—she offers a compelling story of faith, resilience, and transformation. Drawing from her own leadership journey, she created an Individual Leadership Development Plan that helps readers intentionally strengthen resilience, adaptability, authenticity, self-awareness, compassion, and purpose. Rather than separating leadership from lived experience, this work shows how pain, failure, and restoration can become part of the process of forming strong, effective leaders. For readers, the manuscript offers both practical guidance and personal encouragement, serving as a roadmap for navigating hardship, reframing obstacles as opportunities, and discovering how faith and perseverance can lead to renewed vision.

At its core, the project explores how volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous life experiences can become opportunities for extraordinary growth. Written in a book-dissertation style, it blends memoir, leadership theory, coaching insight, and biblical reflection to show that leadership is often shaped in life’s most difficult seasons. By recounting her personal experiences of hardship, rejection, grief, incarceration, healing, and spiritual renewal, Dr. Bradford demonstrates that adversity need not define a person’s future. Instead, it can become the ground where extraordinary strength, wisdom, compassion, and purpose are formed. Each chapter invites readers to reflect, heal, and grow through practical leadership development tools and coaching exercises that support the journey from merely surviving to thriving in the face of adversity.

For its audience, Blueprint for L.O.V.E. serves as both an inspiring personal testimony and a practical leadership guide. It reminds readers that the hardest chapters of life do not have the final word. With honesty, grace, and hope, Dr. Bradford encourages readers to see that setbacks can become places of growth, wounds can carry wisdom, and challenges can open the way to transformation. At its heart, this project affirms that what tried to break a person may become the very thing God uses to shape an extraordinary leader.

Ranger Mentor Handbook: Building Resilient Leaders Through Mentorship in the 75th Ranger Regiment

Ranger Mentor Handbook: Building Resilient Leaders Through Mentorship in the 75th Ranger Regiment

Philip Biddulph | 2026

Abstract

Elite Special Operations units within the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) represent a small, highly selective subset of the U.S. Armed Forces, composed of individuals who demonstrate exceptional physical, cognitive, and leadership capabilities. Despite increasing public attention to these units through popular media, a consistent underlying factor in their effectiveness is leadership rather than tactics, mission sets, or organizational identity.

The 75th Ranger Regiment, widely regarded as the Army’s premier light infantry and direct-action force, has long emphasized leadership as a defining characteristic of its organizational culture. However, recent internal assessments indicate a persistent retention challenge across its battalions, characterized by the loss of experienced, high-performing leaders at a rate that outpaces replacements. This trend presents a critical threat to long-term organizational effectiveness and leadership continuity.

This workbook addresses the retention problem by developing a structured, Ranger-to-Ranger mentorship framework that reinforces individual value within the organization and fosters deliberate leadership development. The approach integrates reflective exercises, collaborative engagement between mentorship “allies”, and applied leadership theory supported by real-world examples. Through a narrative methodology, the author presents personal experiences that illustrate both effective and toxic leadership, as well as the enduring influence of servant leadership exemplified by individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The central proposition of this work challenges conventional notions of commitment within elite military units: “Being willing to die for each other is NOT good enough. We must be willing to LIVE for each other!”

Maritime Competitiveness in the Age of Digital Transformation: A Bid Data Perspective

Maritime Competitiveness in the Age of Digital Transformation: A Bid Data Perspective

Angelo Barrionuevo | 2026

Abstract

Big Data has undergone a remarkable growth since the turn of the 21st century, driven by the role of business intelligence in building reporting capabilities, the explosion of social media, and the widespread adoption of the Internet of Things. Henceforth, digital transformation has had a holistic impact on global maritime trade, making data analytics an integral part of the business landscape. As a result, Big Data has significantly impacted business activities in port security, trade route efficiency, and sustainability. My goal is to demonstrate the significance of Big Data in today’s competitive work environment, with a focus on its volume, variety, and velocity in this current globalized era. The flow of Big Data has evolved, with past data used to inform descriptive analyses and future predictions. Essentially, once this process is integrated into the workflow, the outcome is revealed by applying prescriptive data analytics to assess business value over time. Given the unpredictable nature of the working environment, driven by socioeconomic changes and geopolitical unrest, global leaders must embrace Big Data as a vital business tool to better manage expectations. The need for an ongoing implementation of technological advances and adaptation is critical, necessitating a focus on the competencies and requirements that will be required in the future. The integration of these two aspects can help leadership develop a more strategic understanding of the maritime landscape while maintaining a competitive edge. By improving transparency and making everyone accountable for their actions, the workforce can remain adaptive to prevent cyberattacks while complying with regulatory guidelines. When leaders and followers embrace automation and real-time data, the maritime business can certainly navigate towards a more credible, futuristic work environment driven by technological innovation.

Identifying Healthcare Trends That Impact Quality Patient Care

C’eirra M. Williams | 2025

Abstract

“Identifying Healthcare Trends That Impact Quality Patient Care” Analyzes five current trends in healthcare that impact the quality of patient care. The analysis in this body of work guides healthcare leaders about the positive and negative impact that these trends will have on their industry from an operations and patient care perspective. The five trends I analyzed are managing multigenerational workforces in healthcare, generative artificial intelligence, the level of patient trust, patient satisfaction with care and access, and retail health.

I conducted research using numerous scholarly sources to analyze these trends and to complete this body of work. I analyzed these five trends because it is essential to the evolution of healthcare delivery systems that healthcare leaders and professionals be aware of these trends and design, implement, and execute strategies to respond to them in ways that improve care delivery, ensure quality health services, and produce positive outcomes for patients. This body of work explores leveraging leadership, change management, strategic leadership, strategic planning, data analytics, human resource development, and intergenerational management to lead change efforts in healthcare.

“Identifying Healthcare Trends That Impact Quality Patient Care” Delivers strategic guidance and actionable steps for healthcare leaders. I include the benefits to the organization if they follow the recommendations and actionable steps, as well as the negative implications and outcomes that will occur for the organization, healthcare leaders, professionals, and patients if they do not take action.

These trends are essential to move healthcare into the future because effectively managing multigenerational workforces who will support the multigenerational patient populations and leveraging everyone’s talents is essential to continued success in healthcare. Integrating artificial intelligence into healthcare is happening, and healthcare leaders can be proactive about implementation and leverage it to modernize healthcare delivery systems. Patient trust is required to produce positive patient health outcomes. Patient satisfaction is essential because healthcare is a service industry, and retail health is shifting the paradigm of healthcare delivery systems.

Ultimately “Identifying Healthcare Trends That Impact Quality Patient Care” provides strategies healthcare leaders can execute to respond to the trends in a manner that will support population health, modernize the healthcare system, and improve patient care delivery systems.

Margaret S. Vesnefski | 2025

Abstract

Hawaiʻi’s nonprofit and faith-based organizations face a pivotal moment as they navigate increasing complexity characterized by funding uncertainty, growing community needs, workforce fatigue, and deeply rooted organizational silos. The DSL project introduces Rise Together, an engaging, 8-hour participatory workshop designed to help leaders reinterpret and address these challenges through systems thinking and strategic foresight. Grounded in biblical stewardship, culturally rooted place-based methods, and the core values of ‘aloha’ and collective responsibility, the project encourages leaders to shift from reactive problem-solving to collaborative, future-focused action.

The workshop incorporates experiential learning techniques, utilizing practical tools like systems mapping, force field analysis, STEEPLE environmental scanning, futures wheels, constructive dissent, and community asset mapping. These help leaders identify interdependencies, uncover hidden leverage points, and envision alternative futures collaboratively. Through guided discussions and hands-on exercises, participants learn to interpret complex system dynamics, build cross-sector relationships, and develop resilient leadership practices rooted in shared purpose and trust.

Rise Together offers a replicable, contextually grounded leadership development model that advances Regent University’s mission of Christian leadership to change the world. By fostering foresight, collaboration, and moral imagination, this project contributes a practical pathway for nonprofit and ministry leaders to steward their organizations and communities faithfully and courageously amid uncertainty.

A Comprehensive Handbook/Guide to Developing Person-Centered Leadership In Healthcare: Framework, Competency Model, And Development Roadmap

A Comprehensive Handbook/Guide to Developing Person-Centered Leadership In Healthcare: Framework, Competency Model, And Development Roadmap

Deborah Ventz-Migneco | 2025

Abstract

This handbook offers a timely and comprehensive response to one of healthcare’s most persistent and significant gaps: the absence of a clearly defined, evidence-informed, and practically applicable framework for developing person-centered leaders. While the industry has made considerable progress in patient experience and recognizes the importance of staff well-being, leaders continue to operate without a unifying developmental model that elevates human connection, shared purpose, and relational practice as core expectations of leadership. As healthcare systems confront rising complexity, workforce strain, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, the need to restore and strengthen the humanization of care for patients and staff has never been more urgent. This guide meets that need by bridging theory, research, and real-world practice in an accessible, actionable way.

Grounded in a rigorous person-centered leadership framework, this handbook offers a competency model with detailed rubrics, a developmental roadmap moving beyond checklists toward formation and transformation, and practical tools such as self-assessments, reflective exercises, and structured learning activities. Leader interviews, facilitation guidance, and evidence-based methods make the content adaptable across roles, disciplines, and organizational settings. Designed for senior executives, mid-level managers, and frontline supervisors, this resource equips leaders with the mindset and skillset to cultivate empathy, psychological safety, communication, collaboration, and shared accountability, competencies that directly shape staff well-being, patient experience, and overall quality and safety.

At its core, the handbook calls on leaders to rethink how they relate, decide, and practice. It invites them to expand beyond traditional transactional patterns and embrace a relational approach that honors the interconnectedness of patients, families, staff, and community. Leaders who sense that something essential has been missing in healthcare’s evolution will find in this handbook both validation and direction. By adopting and stewarding person-centered leadership principles, they can help shift organizational cultures, strengthen trust, and create environments where compassion and innovation thrive together. The journey is challenging but deeply worthwhile, carrying the potential to generate meaningful, lasting transformation for individuals, organizations, and healthcare systems alike.

The Role of Strategic Thinking in the Transformation of The Healthcare Industry

The Role of Strategic Thinking in the Transformation of The Healthcare Industry

Grace Ukaegbu | 2025

Abstract

Aptly described as an area that has primarily been understudied in policy formulation and analysis, this manuscript establishes the indispensable role of strategic thinking as a high-level cognitive approach to long-term planning and decision-making. All over the world, things are changing. Change is the only constant in life. We see changes in our physical, material, and spiritual environments. They come in various shapes and dimensions. The health care industry is one of the most sensitive and essential sectors in the life of every nation. Health is wealth, as the saying goes. How we handle the industry determines the strength of the workforce. From the prehistoric period to the present, the healthcare industry has undergone several epochs and stages in its system and delivery. While these efforts have led to significant improvements in citizens’ health, it remains a puzzle that healthcare providers and practitioners have yet to develop a one-time solution to healthcare challenges.

We saw the devastation and havoc caused by some diseases, viruses, and pandemics. We saw Ebola fever, which took many lives across some nations, especially in sub–Saharan Africa. HIV (AIDS) came with much more ferocious devastation all over the world and is still ravaging societies to date. Yet COVID-19 made a mess of efforts to contain and curb global pandemics. When it broke out in 2020, the world was thrown into a state of panic with over 13 million global fatalities, revealing profound deficiencies in early-warning mechanisms, preparedness infrastructures, and strategic foresight capabilities within healthcare institutions worldwide.  Healthcare institutions were caught napping. Questions were being asked why practitioners and experts could not track these deadly diseases and viruses before they occurred. Why were there no proactive or detective mechanisms to avoid such a holocaust? Several questions were begging for answers.

Strategic thinking equips task practitioners with a new way to assess, evaluate, and predict past, present, and future healthcare issues. Embracing strategic thinking helps to tackle these challenges by nurturing a mindset that is creative and practical, reflective yet action-oriented.

The transformative capacity of strategic thinking lies in its ability to bridge the persistent gap between vision and implementation. Unlike rigid planning models that often fail in the face of uncertainty, strategic thinking emphasizes adaptability, learning, and sense-making.

Findings from this study reveal substantial gaps in healthcare delivery that undermine the practical application of strategic thinking. These gaps are shaped by deeply rooted cultural norms, technological inadequacies, widespread health illiteracy, residual primitive health practices, gender-related disparities, and chronic funding constraints.

All of these, in combination with weak regulatory frameworks, conspire to undermine the role of strategic thinking, but when institutionalized, enable the development of robust healthcare environments capable of detecting and addressing potential health challenges well in advance. Persistent public health burdens, including cardiovascular diseases, cholera, smallpox, and influenza, remain prevalent across many societies, underscoring the need for coordinated, strategic, and future-oriented interventions. The eradication and effective management of these diseases depend not solely on medical innovation but on the deliberate application of strategic thinking to healthcare leadership, policy design, and system-wide transformation.
