Michele Bachmann to Speak at 2012 Commencement
| March 22, 2012
Congresswoman Michele Bachmann
Minnesota congresswoman and former candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, Michele Bachmann, will be Regent University's 2012 Commencement speaker on Saturday, May 5.
In 2006, Bachmann became the first Republican woman to be elected to represent Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Currently serving her third term in Congress, she is a member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Financial Services Committee.
In Congress, Bachmann is known as an advocate for bipartisan earmark reform and tax relief, and opposes wasteful government spending. She is among the leaders in the U.S. House pushing for increased energy exploration in the United States.
As a result of opening her home to foster children, Bachmann is also one of Congress' leading advocates for foster and adopted children. She was recently honored with an appointment to the bipartisan Congressional Coalition on the Adoption Institute's Advisory Board.
Prior to serving in the U.S. Congress, Bachmann served in the Minnesota State Senate from 2000-2006. Before that, she spent five years working as a federal tax litigation attorney.
She is a graduate of Anoka High School and Winona State University. She received her J.D. at the O.W. Coburn School of Law at Oral Roberts University and her L.L.M. in Tax Law at the College of William & Mary. The Bachmanns are parents to five biological children and 23 foster children.
This is Bachmann's second visit to Regent in recent years, as she spoke to Regent Law classes and a law chapel service in 2009.
More than 1,200 graduates from Regent's eight schools—the largest number in the university's history—will earn associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees this spring. The commencement ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. on the University Library Plaza.
