Succeeding: Leading After Trauma

Succeeding: Leading After Trauma

Jana Darlington | 2025

Abstract

Succeeding: Leading After Trauma is a hybrid leadership development program designed to equip leaders with the tools needed to identify, address and lead organizations through trauma and recovery toward post-traumatic growth. Through asynchronous and live workshops, participants explore trauma as a factor in organizational change, power dynamics, and leadership effectiveness. The program emphasizes the role of psychological safety and introduces Trauma-Informed Servant Leadership (TISL) as an ideal model for fostering trust and transparency, and healing organizations.

The research addresses gaps in the current literature at the intersection of workplace trauma and leadership theory. Although workplace trauma is gaining increased recognition, existing research focuses on trauma through the lens of crisis management rather than leveraging trauma as a catalyst for growth. This hybrid program focuses on shifting the perspective of leaders from crisis management toward proactive transformation utilizing trauma-informed servant leadership and highlights the global relevance of TISL. Succeeding: Leading After Trauma offers a comprehensive approach to creating high-performing, resilient organizations in an era of increasing complexity and change by integrating research on post-traumatic growth, psychological safety, and trauma-informed leadership.

Layered Leadership: Understanding the Facets of Leadership From A-Z

Layered Leadership: Understanding the Facets of Leadership From A-Z

Shonte’ Baltes | 2025

Abstract

Leadership has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past century. According to Northouse, there have been 65 dimensions of leadership identified in the last 60 years alone, all striving to capture the essence of what it means to lead1. Leadership is not confined to one realm; it’s a universal quality that we find in our families, workplaces, spiritual communities, schools, and the economy. While theories about leadership can provide valuable insights, the true understanding of leadership comes alive through hands-on experiences.

As a society, we are navigating significant governmental and social shifts that can overshadow the uplifting essence of leadership and its vital role within our communities. Each chapter, enriched with biblical reflections, showcases inspiring leaders from scripture, providing contemporary leaders with a wellspring of motivation for both their skills and their faith. While the chapters present practical approaches to leadership, the reflections encourage leaders to delve deeper into their journeys and embrace the spiritual dimensions that illuminate their path to success.

This manuscript is a guiding light for aspiring leaders and those in search of a fresh perspective on leadership. It embodies the theories and methodologies from esteemed scholars and researchers. Its purpose is to inspire and empower readers, equipping emerging leaders with the understanding and confidence to navigate the complexities of leadership. For established leaders, this resource is a powerful tool for education and inspiration within their organizations.

Developing Effective Leadership in Black Communities: Focusing on Parents, Pastors and Politicians

Developing Effective Leadership in Black Communities: Focusing on Parents, Pastors and Politicians

Allen Berry | 2025

Abstract

Assessing Black progress in the 21st century reveals notable growth within the Black community. However, it is essential to recognize the unique dynamics of the Black experience and to develop a leadership strategy that addresses the diverse needs of this community. Unlike immigrants who arrived willingly, this study centers on the descendants of Africans forcibly taken through the Middle Passage. The dispersion of these individuals across the West, the Caribbean, and the Americas was vast. Yet, this research focuses specifically on those in the United States and its territories—individuals who were kidnapped, trafficked, sold, or made prisoners due to tribal conflicts. This work aims to establish strategies that enhance the effectiveness of parents, spiritual, and civic leaders in fostering mental, emotional, and practical growth within the community. By measuring three leadership domains—parenting, pastoring, and political leadership (the “3 P’s”)—this research aims to demonstrate that a unified strategy within these areas will yield positive outcomes for the Black community through focused leadership development.

This manuscript will present leadership strategies designed to promote crime reduction, decrease out-of-wedlock births, and lower truancy and juvenile delinquency rates, thereby reducing dropout rates in majority-minority communities. Additionally, it seeks to address the academic achievement gap that affects Black families, influencing children’s educational experiences and impacting graduation rates and college attendance and completion (Leach & Williams, 2007). While this manuscript does not exaggerate a widely recognized issue, it strives to formulate an effective strategy to tackle the challenges faced by inner-city communities at a national level. A comprehensive path forward must yield a universally applicable strategy that can be implemented across various industries and institutions pertinent to the Black and inner-city communities. In this framework, each leader in their specific domain has a role: parents lead families, pastors oversee spiritual organizations, and politicians guide civic agencies. Each of these leaders holds significant sway over their followers’ perspectives and the cultural landscape within their sphere of influence. Therefore, this manuscript aims to propose a strategy that fosters success by providing measurable outcomes. Organizations can utilize these outcomes to evaluate progress toward their goals and objectives effectively. Ultimately, the manuscript will advocate for a systematic approach that allows for the assessment and evaluation of success through attainable metrics, applicable across groups to meet the challenges faced within families, organizations, and communities.
