Leadership Lessons from the Trenches: A Follower

Leadership Lessons from the Trenches: A Follower’s Perspective

Marlena Hudson | 2025

Abstract

In the book Leadership Lessons from the Trenches: A Follower’s Perspective, the conventional view of leadership as an extraordinary, almost supernatural ability is re-examined. The book proposes that true leadership is inseparable from followership—an often overlooked but vital component of effective leadership. By exploring the notion that all leaders are also followers, the book underscores that a leader’s strength is inherently tied to the followers they guide and the individuals to whom they are accountable.

Drawing on the metaphor of “the trenches” from military contexts, this book emphasizes that real-world, hands-on experience is indispensable for developing practical and effective leadership skills. Leaders who have faced daily challenges, problem-solving side-by-side with their teams, cultivate a grounded approach to leadership that theoretical knowledge alone cannot provide.

Through a blend of lessons learned from the author’s personal experience and observations from the employee perspective, each chapter details insights into how leaders can build stronger, more empathetic relationships with their teams. By being attentive to employees’ perspectives and by reflecting on their own journey as followers, leaders can cultivate a more supportive and productive workplace culture.

Every chapter ends with guided reflection questions to help readers consider how their own leadership approach might evolve. Additionally, the Leadership Lessons Evaluation offers a practical tool for assessing one’s leadership traits, encouraging ongoing personal growth and development. This book provides readers with both reflective and actionable insights, empowering them to lead with authenticity and effectiveness.

Trauma-Informed, Trauma-Competent, and Trauma-Sensitive Leadership

Trauma-Informed, Trauma-Competent, and Trauma-Sensitive Leadership

Deborah Brown | 2025

Abstract

Trauma, the ‘hidden pandemic,’ represents a public health crisis that profoundly impacts local, national, and global levels. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one in five Americans experiences sexual abuse during childhood. One in four endures physical abuse from a parent, leaving visible marks and bruises on their bodies, while one in three couples engage in physical violence. A quarter of us grew up with an alcoholic relative, and one in eight witnessed their mother being beaten. The US Department of Labor confirms that one in seven occupational deaths is related to workplace violence. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 718 workplace homicides and suicides in 2021. Researchers estimate that about 90% of adults will encounter at least one traumatic event in their lifetime, and approximately 6% of the population will experience PTSD at some point, making trauma one of the most under-recognized epidemics worldwide. The ripple effects of trauma extend not only to those who directly experience it but also to those around them.

According to SAMHSA (2014), trauma encompasses any perceived harm that results in lasting adverse effects on a person’s overall functioning and well-being. Examples of trauma include natural disasters, diseases, physical or emotional abuse, prejudice, and community violence. These often terrifying events significantly impact both personal and public health. Felitti et al. (1998) provide strong evidence showing that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse, neglect, and household challenges, are associated with later depression, substance use disorders, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancers. Unfortunately, children born in the early years of the twenty-first century have grown up in a world where mass shootings are a constant reality; this has become their norm, and they will be our future leaders.

A trauma-informed approach can be valuable for tackling workplace conflicts and leadership challenges. Not all wounds are visible. Viewing people through the lens of trauma-informed care can shift the focus from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” This proactive approach to managing stress and uncertainty and supervising individuals can transform working relationships into more productive and meaningful exchanges rather than being burdened with blame, unproductive or toxic interactions, and unsafe environments. In our current climate, Christian leaders who will transform the world must be trauma-informed, trauma-sensitive, and trauma-competent. They must foster psychologically safe environments and possess both strategic and spiritual foresight to envision the future of leadership through the lens of trauma. There is a changing of the guard. Proverbs 14:11: “Where no counsel is, the people fail: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Lead well. Lead wisely.

Leading Multigenerational Teams with Servant Leadership

Leading Multigenerational Teams with Servant Leadership

Darick Bryant | 2025

Abstract

In today’s increasingly diverse workforce, the ability to lead multigenerational teams has become a critical need for organizational success. This presentation examines the application of servant leadership principles within multigenerational teams to address the unique challenges organizations face. Utilizing empirical research, this session explores how servant leadership characteristics foster collaboration, mutual respect, enhanced employee engagement, and performance within teams comprised of Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z.

The session highlights the diverse values and preferences of each generation, emphasizing how servant leadership can bridge generational gaps by cultivating relationships that include love, trust, and understanding. By leveraging a servant leadership approach, leaders can create cultures where team members feel heard, valued, and empowered regardless of their generational background. This approach not only addresses generational conflicts but also builds on the strengths each generation brings into the workplace. The session concludes by offering strategies for integrating servant leadership into organizations that will assist with ensuring multigenerationalteams coexist and thrive within organizations.

Leadership Fundamentals

Leadership Fundamentals

Robert Carlson | 2025

Abstract

Leadership Fundamentals is a seminar taught in a “lunch & learn” format of 60-minute sessions provided over eight events that focus on an organization’s published leadership behaviors. The organization designed the leadership behavior framework to provide a blueprint for developing and fortifying leadership abilities that all employees are expected to demonstrate. The leadership behaviors comprise six leadership competencies that include creating a vision, team building, taking ownership, leading with courage and resilience, and acting with speed. These behaviors provide a baseline for leadership development and help leaders identify gaps and development opportunities targeted at improving their effectiveness. Organizations that define leadership behaviors create an environment that provides numerous benefits resulting in improved organizational performance and overall success. Authentic leadership theory and military leadership development are also included in the seminar to consider the organization’s dominant leadership style, and its work with leaders in the defense industry.

The Leadership Fundamentals seminar is led by a senior leader whose role is to improve the participants’ understanding of the basics of leadership by leveraging real-world examples that focus on the practical application of the behaviors and abilities essential to being a leader. A mix of scholarly and popular press sources expose participants to a foundational understanding from the academic creators of leadership theory and practical application ideas developed by well-known and accomplished thought leaders. A tailored approach can be applied to adjust the discussion and examples to focus on the needs of the participants, providing a personalized learning experience. The outcome of the seminar is a more informed leader who has a deeper understanding of leadership and the organization’s leadership behaviors. Participants establish a baseline understanding of their leadership with exposure to resources and fellow leaders who can support their development needs.

An Opportunity for Real Change in Social Services

An Opportunity for Real Change in Social Services

Kama J. Chase | 2025

Abstract

Social services provide specific, limited services mandated by the federal government to safeguard vulnerable adults and children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation, assist individuals in achieving self-sufficiency, promote independence, and arrange out-of-home placement when required. Every state must adhere to federal and state requirements, but there can be variations in the operation and delivery of social services programs. As government entities, social services agencies have pledged to serve with integrity and uphold public trust. However, they have faced serious allegations, including financial misconduct, ethical violations, and discrimination. The turnover rate for staff at social service agencies typically ranges from 20% to 50%, resulting in increased stress for leadership and frontline staff. This creates a challenging environment for government agencies serving the public as they grapple with poor leadership, the pandemic, and widespread distrust.

While succession planning, coaching, foresight, analytics, and development are all essential aspects of solutions, little thought is given to implementing multiple aspects into current programs. These specialties sometimes overlap, but not enough to make a difference when needed. Without a vision that includes a program with the five specialties, it could explain why this issue is ongoing within social services and other government agencies. Development programs prepare frontline staff for future roles, enabling them to cultivate new skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for leadership positions while identifying their strengths and weaknesses for effective succession planning. Frontline staff development aims to enhance overall organizational productivity and performance. This writing is a comprehensive overview of how implementing these changes in Social Services could halt the current cycle of failure.

Bridging The Gap: Succession Strategies for a Multi-Generational Workforce Seminar

Bridging The Gap: Succession Strategies for a Multi-Generational Workforce Seminar

Naomi Chitambira | 2025

Abstract

As generational shifts accelerate, institutions face the urgent need to develop leadership pipelines that ensure continuity and sustainability. The seminar examined succession planning within the context of today’s multigenerational workforce, where Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z bring diverse values, communication styles, and expectations into the workplace. With leadership transitions accelerating and workforce demographics shifting, organizations must move beyond traditional replacement planning and adopt inclusive, future-oriented strategies.

The project was delivered as a full-day seminar at the Executive Leadership Forum in Eswatini under the theme Bridging the Gap: Succession Strategies for a Multigenerational Workforce. Designed for senior executives, the seminar provides leaders with tools for embedding succession into organizational culture while leveraging generational diversity as a strategic advantage. Pre-seminar survey findings revealed key concerns: limited formal succession plans, resistance to change, generational misunderstandings, and gaps in mentorship and leadership development. Importantly, Millennials expressed significantly less confidence in succession readiness compared to Gen. X leaders, signaling the need for more inclusive approaches.

The project emphasized aligning succession with organizational strategy, strengthening leadership pipelines, and creating resilience through succession depth. Strategies represented included intergenerational mentoring to transfer knowledge, flexible work arrangements to drive engagement, multi-channel communication to bridge generational divides, and tailored development opportunities aligned with motivational drivers across cohorts. The seminar highlighted technology-enabled tools, such as predictive analytics and AI assessments, as enablers of agile, evidence-based succession planning. The project affirms succession planning as a culture rather than a one-time event. The framework advances leadership continuity by embedding adaptive, inclusive practices that preserve institutional knowledge, accelerate leadership readiness, and strengthen resilience across generations. Its intentional design empowers organizations to build agile talent ecosystems, cultivate diverse leadership pipelines, and position themselves for sustained excellence and competitive advantage in an increasingly complex global environment.

Strengthening the Church and Its Leaders: Paul

Strengthening the Church and Its Leaders: Paul’s Blueprint in 1 Corinthians

Benjamin Crisp | 2025

Abstract

Strengthening the Church and Its Leaders explores select passages from 1 Corinthians and their formational insights for the wide-ranging issues church leaders face. These passages paint the Apostle Paul’s vision of a church free from issues like division, immorality, pride, pluralism, compromise, and misuse of spiritual gifts, offering a blueprint for church leaders willing to heed Biblical counsel. To shift pluralistic, prideful thinking, Paul emphasized Christ’s wisdom and the Spirit’s power above human eloquence, skill, and strategy. Our world desperately needs church leaders who rely upon God’s grace, Christ’s gospel, and the Holy Spirit’s power.

Strengthening the Church and Its Leaders bridges the gap between scholarly commentaries and practitioner’s guides to church leadership. It is exegetically accessible and theoretically practical. It is helpful for lead pastors looking to gain biblically sound insight into their challenges or lay leaders wanting to develop their leadership and ministry. This book is quite adaptable in its uses, from an entry-level ministry textbook to a church staff formational reading. It offers accessible insights for any church leader.

The Apostle Paul’s emphasis on discipleship and reliance on God’s power over human wisdom is essential for healthy church leadership. Examining Paul’s blueprint and its practical applications will provide church leaders with biblical approaches for fostering spiritual growth, preserving doctrinal integrity, and navigating personal and ecclesial challenges. It is a helpful guide for church leaders who want to build Christ-centered and Spirit-empowered local churches in our rapidly changing world.

Leadership Spot Check: A Leadership Development Journey

Leadership Spot Check: A Leadership Development Journey

Ryan Daffron | 2025

Abstract

Leadership is often viewed as a journey of vision, influence, and impact. Yet, even the most seasoned leaders can find themselves feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, and out of sync with their teams. This misalignment—known as leadership dissonance—is a silent disruptor that erodes trust, weakens morale, and diminishes effectiveness. It occurs when a leader’s values, actions, and leadership style fail to align, creating confusion and disengagement within an organization. But what if there was a way to identify and correct leadership dissonance before it causes lasting damage?

This research introduces the Leadership Spot Check framework, a powerful model designed to help leaders recalibrate and sustain their effectiveness. Developed through years of leadership experience, this model is both a practical tool and a transformational journey, guiding leaders through self-assessment, realignment, and continuous growth. More than just theory, Leadership Spot Check is an actionable process made accessible through an innovative podcast and interactive workbooks that provide leaders with an engaging, flexible, and deeply personal way to sharpen their leadership approach.

At the heart of this research is a simple yet profound question: What happens when leaders drift from their core values and lose sight of their mission? The study unpacks this issue through compelling case studies from South Africa, Australia, India, England, Ecuador, and the United States, as well as current leaders and those of the past. Each illustrates the high cost of leadership dissonance, from corporate scandals to ethical failures. The research reveals how leaders at all levels can fall into dissonance and, more importantly, how they can recover.

The Leadership Spot Check framework provides a structured yet adaptable method for leaders to stay aligned with their values and leadership goals. Leaders must first understand the deeply rooted beliefs and values that shape their decision-making and leadership philosophy. Through personal mission statements and scenario planning, they gain the clarity and foresight needed to navigate challenges before they arise. Beyond technical expertise, the ability to communicate, listen actively, and cultivate emotional intelligence is essential to maintaining trust and influence. True leadership longevity comes not from working harder but from maintaining physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Self-care and soul-care are not luxuries but essential components of sustainable leadership.

This research goes beyond traditional leadership training by leveraging the power of podcasting as a tool for transformation. Unlike seminars or corporate training sessions, the Leadership Spot Check podcast meets leaders where they are—on their daily commute, during a workout, or in quiet moments of reflection. Each episode unpacks key leadership insights in a way that is engaging, relatable, and immediately applicable. The interactive workbooks provide an additional layer of impact, turning insights into action. Designed for quick, effective reflection, these resources help leaders apply key lessons, conduct their own leadership spot checks, and develop personalized strategies for sustained success.

Leadership is not just about achieving results—it’s about staying in alignment with who you are, why you lead, and how you impact those around you. Leadership Spot Check is more than research; it’s a movement empowering leaders to rediscover their purpose, sharpen their skills, and lead with integrity. Whether through the podcast, workbooks, or the core principles explored in this study, leaders now have a roadmap to eliminate leadership dissonance and cultivate authentic, effective leadership in every season of their journey.
