Abstract

Community Church, a non-denominational church located in Ashburn, Virginia, like many other organizations today, is proactively and creatively seeking to provide consistent, practical leadership to meet the growing needs of its mission, vision, and objectives. Community Church desires to be a generational church that demonstrates the love of God. This mission involves equipping its people to attain the highest level of personal influence and impact within the church and without. This DSL project provides a Christian leadership development curriculum designed to equip Community Church members to become Christ-centered, effective leaders aligned with its mission and values and in support of its overall discipleship process and core leadership competencies. The curriculum aims to provide a comprehensive leadership development program that includes Biblical teaching and leadership theory, personal reflection, discussion, practical application, and ongoing coaching and mentoring to equip volunteer and staff leaders for successful ministry leadership at Community Church. The curriculum equips individuals for varying levels of leadership: leading self, leading teams, and leading other leaders to achieve their most significant impact and role in furthering the kingdom of God, advancing the church’s ministry objectives, ensuring a pipeline of mature, effective Christian leaders, and guiding many others toward their God-given potential. The program offers development lessons based on Community Church’s chosen framework for core leadership competencies, including questions for personal reflection, discussion, and ongoing feedback and accountability. The competencies emphasize developing key spiritual, relational, and practical leadership skills and behaviors needed to excel in various roles and levels of responsibility, such as self-awareness, team building, communication, strategic thought and action, inspiration, vision casting, coaching, mentoring, problem-solving, continuous learning, and providing value-added, excellent service. A literature review examines the key themes, theories, and best practices related to Christian leadership development that provide the foundation for the curriculum proposal.
