Abstract

Shaping Tomorrow’s Utilities is a 10-episode podcast series focused on helping water and wastewater utility leaders think beyond short-term pressures and make stronger decisions for the long term. Utilities are being asked to manage aging infrastructure, rising uncertainty, climate volatility, financial strain, and growing public expectations, all while operating within planning and budget cycles that often prioritize immediate needs over long-range stewardship. This project explores that tension and offers a practical response.

At its core, the podcast is about helping leaders move from a reactive mindset to a more future-ready one. Rather than treating foresight as prediction, the series presents it as a disciplined way to notice change earlier, test assumptions, explore multiple plausible futures, and make better decisions before problems become crises. Across the episodes, listeners are introduced to practical concepts such as weak-signal detection, scenario thinking, adaptive pathways, anticipatory governance, and futures literacy, all translated into language and examples that fit the realities of utility leadership.
