Maritime Readiness Failure: United States Navy

Abstract

The United States Navy is suffering from crippling readiness problems which require immediate attention. Mounting maintenance backlogs, manning, exhaustion, a shrinking and failing fleet, and non-essential policies are hindering a once great fleet. Wasteful spending and a wandering mission statement have allowed countries, like China, to grow larger and more technically advanced fleets. Meanwhile, other countries have implemented changes that saved large amounts of money while maximizing equipment life and maintenance. Further hindering the Navy is a lack of enlistment and retention. Polices that do not focus on national security have been implemented that have caused distaste and deterrence. Shipbuilding has significantly lacked for over a decade and longer. This book discussed these issues in detail and provides a plethora of evidence, including a variety of reports from the Government Accountability Office. Further, it offers detailed solutions, and implementation plans for each issue. Some solutions offer answers to these problems and others applicable today, like immigration. The United States Navy must find its way back to the top while adhering to and abiding by its mission. Can the Navy reclaim its former glory?
