Leading with Impact: Performance Management for Young Leaders

Abstract
The skill of establishing and maintaining effective leadership dictates the productivity of individuals, groups, and societies, thereby shaping their growth and development across academia, business, and science. Emerging leaders in these fields often began their journey in their primary, secondary, and tertiary school years. However, there seems to be a lack of effective influence from young and emerging leaders; the trend is moving away from innovation and creativity and toward copying and duplication. Today, the perception of an effective leader has been distorted by popular media outlets and condensed into hierarchical titles and unrealistic salary expectations. This paper identifies the potential young and emerging leaders of tomorrow by extracting the characteristics (e.g., preparation, planning & execution, and monitoring & controlling) through a six-hour leadership training program that includes: unlocking their potential, locking in the targets, progress in practice, leveling up the team, empowering people to level up, and stronger together perform better. These tools will enhance their decision-making ability to identify opportunities and convert them into success. Based on literature review and observational research of successful emerging youth leadership programs in Singapore and South Korea, the results indicate that many of their participants went on to become successful socio-economic contributors locally, nationally, and globally. If a family, community, or nation can change the trajectory of its future from negative to positive in less than a century, then any society that is currently unproductive can make the necessary adjustments and achieve similar outcomes.
