Leadership Transition, Mantle Exchange, and the Pastor
Leadership Transition, Mantle Exchange, and the Pastor’s Wife: Followership Impact of Leadership Transition
Cynthia L. Butler | 2024
Abstract
This project is a work of conviction which is more than an assignment, it is a work of the heart and a call of God. Recent world events have raised issues of leadership transition and succession. The devastatingly sad state of events during the COVID-19 pandemic caused the loss of many senior and patriarchal members of churches and families. Leadership was unexpectedly passed to unprepared leaders. There had been no exposure to the organizational business of the church. Succession plans, mentorships, and internships for leadership training to carry on the anointed mantle of ministry leadership were non-existent in most cases. When the need for transition enters the doors of the ministry of Christ, it requires the full consideration of the mantle of God’s empowerment of Christian leadership. The church leadership transition must function under the spiritual leadership and higher power of the Holy Spirit.
The two sections of this leadership transition manuscript focus on “Spiritual Leadership Transition” and the impact on the “Followership specific to the Pastor’s Wife.” The mantle exchange is spiritual and those who carry and pick up the mantle must be chosen by God as he has done from the beginning. First, “Leadership Transition” and the basic principles based on the research and theories of leadership transition meets the standards of spiritual mantle exchange as examples by Elijah and Elisha. The exchange of the reins of influence and power is different for Christian or Godly leaders than the secular exchange of leadership. The mandatory “Mantle Exchange” is a biblically based example of what God requires in ministry leadership transition.
The leadership’s accountability to the souls of followers, the sheep of the mighty Shepperd, should be a priority consideration in the leadership transition and mantle exchange in honor of the biblical examples that include the great mantle exchange of Jesus Christ. The leadership transition interviews of husband-and-wife ministry leaders who transparently share their experiences as they go through mantle exchange reveal the real-life engagement and personal impact of change. The couples bring an emotionally packed perspective to the spiritual leadership transition. The process of vision release of a church or Christian organization to a new leader inevitably is focused on the followers. The manuscript surveys and reviews the followership impact on the intimate support of the “Pastor’s Wife” during a leadership transition. The “Pastor’s Wife” represents the followership impact and how she navigates the change of leadership that disregards her years of sacrifice and service without a succession plan. Many are left bitter and insecure in the aftermath of leadership change. The Pastor’s Wife’s voice, purpose, and identity are dismantled during the transition. Many wives will abandon careers, goals, financial security, and personal voices, to endure devaluing self-sacrifice to contribute to the success of their husband’s ministry. The challenge in transition is to secure the follower’s voice and purpose during and after the leadership transition without destroying the legacy of dutiful and faithful support. This project covers these leadership transition sections using research, interviews and surveys of current transitioning ministry leaders. The scenarios are different, but present common denominators they share despite how differently their transition plan is structured. The survey of pastors’ wives provides real-time perspectives of followership impact as the mantle is exchanged during the leadership transition.
