Abstract

Leadership Fundamentals is a seminar taught in a “lunch & learn” format of 60-minute sessions provided over eight events that focus on an organization’s published leadership behaviors. The organization designed the leadership behavior framework to provide a blueprint for developing and fortifying leadership abilities that all employees are expected to demonstrate. The leadership behaviors comprise six leadership competencies that include creating a vision, team building, taking ownership, leading with courage and resilience, and acting with speed. These behaviors provide a baseline for leadership development and help leaders identify gaps and development opportunities targeted at improving their effectiveness. Organizations that define leadership behaviors create an environment that provides numerous benefits resulting in improved organizational performance and overall success. Authentic leadership theory and military leadership development are also included in the seminar to consider the organization’s dominant leadership style, and its work with leaders in the defense industry.

The Leadership Fundamentals seminar is led by a senior leader whose role is to improve the participants’ understanding of the basics of leadership by leveraging real-world examples that focus on the practical application of the behaviors and abilities essential to being a leader. A mix of scholarly and popular press sources expose participants to a foundational understanding from the academic creators of leadership theory and practical application ideas developed by well-known and accomplished thought leaders. A tailored approach can be applied to adjust the discussion and examples to focus on the needs of the participants, providing a personalized learning experience. The outcome of the seminar is a more informed leader who has a deeper understanding of leadership and the organization’s leadership behaviors. Participants establish a baseline understanding of their leadership with exposure to resources and fellow leaders who can support their development needs.
