Abstract
The research study explored the lived experiences of women occupying leadership roles in the public sector and how they navigate through the barriers. This study was an examination to help understand the factors behind the barriers that some women in leadership face. The data collected utilized phenomenological research design and literature. Additionally, data collection included in-depth interviews with 10 female leader participants from various levels of leadership within the public sector in the State of Florida. This dissertation allowed the participants to share their own personal experiences, feelings, and perspective with respect to being a leader. This research contributes to future conversations and studies on gender roles in leadership development and specific recommendations that can potentially break the glass ceiling.
