Counseling Services

Regent Counseling Services

We provide free professional counseling at the Virginia Beach campus to any Regent students who are enrolled in at least one class. Services include individual counseling, group counseling, pre-marital and marriage counseling, assessments, psychiatric care, and psychoeducational workshops. All counseling is provided or supervised by licensed professionals, is completely confidential, and adheres to all laws and ethics that govern the counseling profession.

ELIGIBILITY

Students must be currently enrolled in at least one class and willing to be served at the Virginia Beach campus.

During the summer and winter breaks, students may participate in counseling as long as they are registered for the following semester.

“Dr. Robbie,” the Director of Counseling Services, joined Regent University in February of 2012. With over 30 years of experience in counseling, he has worked with a countless number of individuals, groups, and families facing a plethora of mental health issues. While he has expertise working with many types of concerns, he has specific interests in issues related to relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, and church/spiritual abuse. A former college athlete, Robbie, is admittedly a sports fanatic and enjoys fishing and computer gaming. Robbie and his wife, Shannon, have been married for over 30 years and have two adult sons.

Dr. Kayij-Wint is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and an Approved Supervisor and Clinical Fellow (AAMFT). She earned a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Saint Martin’s University and a doctoral degree in counseling from Oregon State University. Her specialties include systemic counseling, women’s mental health, marriage and family counseling, trauma, military-related trauma, and developmental counseling. Dr. Kayij-Wint is a counselor educator with previous faculty positions at numerous universities. Additionally, she is a researcher with multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as presentations at local, regional, and national conferences.

Noelle is a Resident in Counseling who graduated with her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Regent University. She also holds a BA in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice from Metropolitan State University of Denver. Noelle takes a person-centered and trauma-informed approach with all clients, with an emphasis on creating a safe space and building foundational trust within the therapeutic relationship. She also uses an eclectic approach, pulling from several different theories and modalities such as psychodynamic, solution-focused, Internal Family Systems, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy to meet each client’s unique needs. Some of Noelle’s interests outside of work include hiking, camping, sports (especially ice hockey), live music, musical theater, and spending time at the beach with her husband and their dog.

Eugene graduated from York University with a BA in Philosophy and from Regent University with a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with an Award of Excellence. He is now a licensed professional counselor and has certifications in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Personality Disorders Certifications Training (C-PD). His professional interests include trauma, anxiety, OCD, depression, grief, men’s issues and spiritual and religious issues. Other areas of life he enjoys are food, music, powerlifting, basketball, gaming, learning, and spending time with friends, family, and God.

Palmer is a Resident in Counseling who graduated from Regent University with a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. His undergraduate degree was a BA in Foreign Affairs with a minor in Military Leadership & National Security Studies from Hampden-Sydney College. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa and was selected as the Outstanding Graduate of the Year for his program at Regent. He utilizes the theories and methods of DBT, psychodynamic, person-centered, and reality therapy while working with clients. He enjoys exercising, reading, and spending time with his family.

JoJo is a Resident in Counseling who is committed to helping clients achieve their goals and increase wellness. She has a double major in Spanish and Psychology from Virginia Tech and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the Townsend Institute at Concordia University Irvine. She believes in an eclectic approach, tailored to fit each client, and integrates psychodynamic, CBT, and IFS methods. When not working, JoJo enjoys riding her horse, cuddling her dachshund, doing CrossFit, and reading fiction books.

Abby has worked as the Office Manager for Counseling Services since April of 2024. She completed a B.A. in Communication Studies from Regent University, concentrating on Professional and Technical Writing and is currently working toward a Master of Business Administration. She offers administrative support, project management, and morale improvement to her team, working to create an organized and restorative mental health clinic atmosphere. In her free time, she enjoys reading, hiking, baking, and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Brent Burhite is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 26 years of healthcare experience. He specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD, mood disorders, and sleep disturbances, helping individuals cope with overall life stressors. Dr. Burhite strongly believes in a holistic approach to mental health care and emphasizes interprofessional collaboration to meet unique client needs. He is a firm believer that medication management is only a portion of treating mental health concerns and helps clients utilize all available resources to achieve their treatment objectives.
