The Gottman Method Couples Therapy

This core clinical Level 1 training program provides participants with an opportunity to receive marriage and couples counseling training from the premier couple’s therapist John Gottman. This event will only be available for current Regent students, alumni of Regent University, and faculty. After the participants complete the 15 hours of training, they will receive a certificate of completion. Attendees will have the opportunity to earn CE’s for an additional fee.

Clinicians will learn

  • New research-based assessments and effective interventions to understand couples’ struggles
  • Research-based strategies and tools to help couples manage conflict
  • Methods to help couples process the fights and heal their hurts
  • Techniques for couples to deepen their intimacy and minimize relapse

  • In order to host this program, we require a minimum of 10 participants. Students will be refunded if we do not have enough students to proceed.

Dr. Williams, Director of the Counselor Education & Supervision (PhD) Program at Regent University.

Dr. Williams has a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Florida. He also has a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Hartford and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in both Florida and Virginia.

Dr. Williams is Director of the Counselor Education & Supervision (PhD) Program at Regent University and has served the past 8 years as Associate Professor for both Doctoral and Masters counseling programs. His research interests are career development, the intersection of ethnicity, and social economic status as it pertains to mental health. Additional research interests include multicultural and advocacy, addictions, and couples counseling. Dr. Williams has worked for more than twenty years in various administrative roles in higher education at the University of Connecticut, the University of Florida and Regent University, helping students find their purpose in life through essential mental health counseling and mentorship. His focus centers on career, spirituality, calling, and meaning. In addition to working in higher education, Dr. Williams has worked in community counseling agencies, that focused on addictions treatment and co-occurring disorders. Currently he is the owner of Impact Counseling, Coaching and Consulting, LLC, a private mental health counseling practice where he focuses on marriage and couples counseling. He has also taught couples counseling courses, presented at conferences, and conducted trainings on marriage counseling. Finally, Dr. Williams has completed levels 1, 2 and 3 of the Gottman Therapy training.

Rodney A. Fry

Rodney Fry holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from John Brown University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S). He specializes in Play Therapy as a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S) and is also trained in Gottman Marriage Therapy and Technology-Assisted Counseling.

Originally from Mountain Home, Arkansas, Rodney earned his Bachelor of Science from Central Baptist College in Conway and later completed a Master’s degree at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Regent University. Rodney and his wife are blessed with six children and three grandchildren.

Rodney enjoys working with individuals, couples, children, families, and groups. He understands that life’s challenges can feel overwhelming, and taking the first step toward help is often the hardest part. His goal is to provide a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment where clients can feel supported as they overcome obstacles and move toward living the life they were created to enjoy.

Rebecca

Rebecca is a second-year student in the PhD program in Counselor Education and Supervision. She holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University and a Master’s degree in Government from Johns Hopkins University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Illinois and a National Certified Counselor (NCC).

Rebecca’s research interests include counselor preparation and training, trauma-informed clinical practice, masculinity and men’s experiences in therapy, and the impacts of betrayal trauma on individuals and couples. She is also interested in how public policy and systemic factors shape access to mental health services and influence counselor education. She has completed training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy Levels 1 and 2, as well as Gottman programs in Couples and Addiction Recovery and Treating Affairs and Trauma.
