The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) is pleased to offer a summer study abroad trip to Scotland.

The trip is being offered to all Regent students, and it may also be taken without the coursework or by family members and friends interested in the experience, if space is available. Students taking the study abroad course associated with this trip (GENE 475 – Scottish History & Culture) for credit will have priority in the application approval.

Please refer to the Financial Aid Calendar for federal aid disbursement dates. If you DO NOT have federal aid to cover your balance in full, you must either: Pay in full OR enroll in the Tuition Installment Plan (TIP) by the Semester Check-In deadline. Failure to do so could put your registration in jeopardy of being dropped for non-payment. Both payments and enrollment in Tuition Installment Plan (TIP) can be done in your Genysis accounts under the Bill + Payment Center Tab.

For Non-Credit: If you are taking this class for non-credit, you must pay the $1,000 deposit online by March 1, 2026. The remaining amount of $1845 must be paid online by May 15, 2026.

Students will have a choice to take the following course while studying abroad in Scotland:

GENE 475 – Scottish History & Culture with Dr. Brain Bauguswill take place during the Spring 2026 semester in an eight-week, online course format, from March-May, with a required one-week class in Scotland from June 18 – June 26, 2026.

GENE 475, Special Topics: Scottish History & Culture (Spring 2026, Session D, Online)

Explores the impact of Scottish thinkers on the shaping of the modern world. Scotland, on the geographical edge of Europe, sharing a border with only one country and largely isolated, having internal political disunity and frequently at war with or in subjugation to its more powerful southern neighbor, was frequently considered insignificant and dismissed as a cultural and intellectual backwater. However, despite this history and broader perception, Scotland produced more influential world changers in more fields (at least on a per capita basis) than almost any other country on the planet and has had huge influence on the United States. This course will focus on some of the most significant contributors especially as they impacted the United States’ founding and early years. We will study the life, times and work of Adam Smith, David Hume and John Knox, among others. In addition to people, we will study Scotland’s influence on American culture and history including the fact that the first permanent colony in America was named for a Scottish (and English) King James VI, there was active trade activity between the colonies and Scotland in the colonial period and Scottish culture heavily influenced American Southern culture.

Undergraduate students may take GENE 475 as a 3-credit hour elective course or as a substitute for HIST 208 or to fulfill 3 credits of European History. This course is not available for graduate students.  Students may attend the trip without taking this class; however, all students must participate in all items on the trip itinerary. Course details such as syllabus, book list, and other items specific to the course will be shared with students once they are enrolled in the class.

Note for Undergraduate Students: You will not be able to register for any of these courses as you would normally. After you submit your application and pay the $1,000 deposit, the Scotland trip administrator, will send the list of students to Academic Advising to register them in the correct class as a group.

NOTES ABOUT THE ITINERARY FOR June 18 – June 26, 2026.

A formal itinerary of all sites and locations will be shared once all attendees are confirmed and deposited. All itinerary locations and activities are subject to change without notice and are not definite depending upon weather, business hours of operation and time. We highly recommend you be prepared for inclement weather and wear comfortable clothes and shoes as you may walk up to twelve miles each day. For “Meals on your own” you are welcome to eat at any establishment you desire. Most meals cost £5-10 for a cheap lunch (sandwiches, pastries), £10-25 for main courses at dinner.

We are planning on visiting the following cities:

  • Edinburgh
  • Kirkcaldy
  • Glasgow
  • Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Scottish Highlands
