Textbook Translation Receives Award

By Rachel Judy | January 4, 2011

The Korean translation of Family Therapies, a textbook authored by School of Psychology & Counseling professors Dr. Mark Yarhouse and Dr. Jim Sells was recently named 2010 "Best Christian Book of the Year" in the Ministry category. The award was given by the Korean Christian Publications Association (KCPA) based on the quality of the translation, design and binding.

The book is geared toward both students and practicing Christian therapists to provide a Christian perspective on various theories and approaches to counseling families. "The book has two priorities," explains Sells. "First, to inform the reader of the historic approaches to the family therapy profession; second, to explain ways that those involved in counseling/care-related ministries with families might use these theories to enhance their work with whole families, couples and parents."

The book, originally published in 2008, was translated by the Christian Literature Crusade.

"A translation is important, as there is a growing and vibrant Christian community that reads and speaks Korean and that is looking for good material that is written from an explicitly Christian worldview," explained Yarhouse.

Sells agreed. "I think that this award reflects where the Korean church is in regards to ministry priorities and needs. First, that Intervarsity [Press] and the Christian Literature Crusade would choose to translate the book into Korean rather than ... any other language indicates who is buying Christian publications—that is to say, who is seeking this type of resource. Second, that the KCPA would give this book the award for book of the year in 'Ministry' indicates what the Korean church is declaring as their need."
