GLE Co-hosts Entrepreneur Awards for Hampton Roads Community

By Sarah H. Dolan | June 22, 2009

L-R: GLE Professor Dr. Greg Stone, Dr. Billie M. Reed (Entrepreneur of the Year) and Jeffrey L. McWaters, founder of AMERIGROUP Corporation.

Regent University School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship (GLE) partnered with Inside Business to co-host the 2009 Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards (EEA) June 22 at The Founders Inn. EEA celebrates the innovative spirit of Hampton Roads' entrepreneurs by honoring individuals who create successful businesses and have a positive impact on the community.

Dr. Billie M. Reed, executive director of Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority (VCSFA), was named the 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year.

Reed contributed to the establishment of VCSFA, a rocket launching business, in 1995. He successfully built the infrastructure to get FAA licensure—one of four spaceports in the U.S. with this designation. He also founded and served for eight years on the board of the Virginia Space Flight Academy, which has more than 1,100 middle-school children graduates.

Jeffrey L. McWaters, founder of AMERIGROUP Corporation, was the keynote speaker for the luncheon event honoring the entrepreneurs.

"Despite the current struggles in this trying economy, there are many who are still destined for great leadership," said McWaters. "Today, we are celebrating stories of success."

McWaters shared the story behind his career, which included an uphill battle through trials and circumstances. "As I thought about my future one thing I always worked on was looking toward the long-term—never give up," he said.

He encouraged businessmen and women to guard the freedoms of entrepreneurship and capitalism, which helped to re-establish a post 9/11 America.

Other entrepreneurs honored at the event were Jennifer Crain (Homeland Contracting Corporation), Martin A. Einhorn (Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer, P.C.), Bob Golden (The GBS Group), Jennifer W. Moore (The Moore Group), Jeffrey Ringer (Ringer/rg), Shannon C. Rose (The Arc of the Virginia Peninsula's Lewis B. Puller Center), Doña Storey (Quality Technical Services, Inc. and, Nicole Stuart (Top Guard Security), Jon S. Wheeler (Wheeler Interests) and Holly Yaskowsky (Blush Bridal Consignment Boutique).
