RSG Announces Master of Public Administration

By Amanda Morad | January 24, 2012

Professors and administrators in Regent University's Robertson School of Government (RSG) have been eagerly awaiting the one piece of mail that would help chart their future course. On Thursday, Jan. 19, RSG announced they had received the final approvals from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) needed to launch a new degree program this fall: a Master of Public Administration (MPA).

"The goal is to provide a high quality Christian worldview degree program for pre-service, mid-career and executive level professionals in government and nonprofit organizations," said Regent's Executive Vice President, Dr. Paul Bonicelli. The program will be offered on-line and on campus beginning fall 2012.

The MPA will consist of 45 core credit hours with four 12-credit concentrations: Nonprofit Administration and Civil Society Organizations, Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Public Leadership and Management (in conjunction with the School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship) and General Public Administration.

"The MPA program is a vital addition to RSG and significantly enhances the breadth, depth and scope of our mission to change the world through Christian servant leadership within the public and nonprofit sectors," said Dr. Gary Roberts, RSG's interim dean.

According to the program proposal, the market for MPA graduates is growing rapidly with projected increases in federal, state and local government hiring, as well as substantial projected growth in the non-profit sector, between now and 2018.

The MPA program will also be synergistic with other degree programs. Students will eventually have the opportunity to complete a BA in Government and earn their MPA in a joint 5-year degree plan, convert their MA in Government toward earning an MPA, and complete a joint Law and MPA (MPA/JD) degree.

A primary goal of the program is to interject a Christian worldview into public affairs education, public policy and management. MPA graduates influence the policy and administrative processes at all levels of American society, Roberts proposed. Regent's program "educates and equips graduates to enter this vital profession with a strong biblical and interdisciplinary understanding of the world."

Another major goal of the program is to provide faith-based and Christian not-for-profit organizations with capable and trained leaders and managers. "Regent should be a leader in nonprofit education given its faith-based integration and the collaborative relationships with CBN, Operation Blessing and the Center for Law and Justice," Roberts explained.

The proposed program builds upon the National Association of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) public administration accreditation guidelines, exceeding top national academic standards for the field. Regent's program will integrate best-practice public administration analysis from domestic and international sources, as well as service learning options in each class.
