Regent University alumnus Dr. Rodrigo Zarate (MBA '03, DSL '07) was recently awarded the 2011 ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award for the Latin American region during the 2011 Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Annual Conference held in Indianapolis, Ind.

Zarate began teaching undergraduate business and leadership courses at Universidad EAN in Bogota, Colombia, in 2010. He was soon noticed by the International Council of Business Schools and Programs, a regional council of the ACBSP.

According to Ramiro Molina Penagos, associate professor and dean of the College of Business Administration, Finance and Economics at Universidad EAN, "Rodrigo's excellent abilities and experience stand out in the academic field, not only in teaching, but in the development of curricula in both English and Spanish, as well as in the areas of research and management of academic programs."

The ACBSP evaluated candidates in the areas of excellence in classroom teaching and learning, professional development, institutional versatility, curriculum development, and community commitment. Zarate earned high marks in every category.

"I know that this [award] is because of God, and I honor Him and thank Him, because I know He is doing this because of His grace and mercy. I have been doing my part, which is working hard, but God is the one who made the decision to give me the award," Zarate said.

With a vision to support the positive transformation occurring within his country, Colombian native Zarate persevered through his rigorous graduate and doctoral studies while working as a graduate assistant at Regent's Virginia Beach, Va., campus. In 2007, with both his MBA and Doctor of Strategic Leadership in hand, Zarate focused his attention on returning to Colombia. Today, he is making an impact by teaching and preparing Colombia's future leaders.

"I am teaching the way my professors taught me in both the MBA and DSL programs at Regent," Zarate explained. "The excellent education, the demanding work, and the humility I witnessed in my professors provided me with an incredible model to follow in my teaching and my life."
