Study Abroad & Visiting Students
Study Abroad Students
Scholarship aid applies only to courses taken at Regent University and does not transfer to study abroad programs. Students who choose to study abroad may qualify for federal and private loans if they meet all eligibility requirements. Because loan processing can take time, plan well in advance of your term abroad.
Study Abroad Programs at Regent University
Regent University offers a variety of study abroad programs throughout the year. Visit the Study Abroad page for program details. Students who participate in Regent-sponsored study abroad programs may qualify for financial aid, subject to applicable requirements and policies.
Study Abroad Programs at Other Schools
Only credits authorized by your dean qualify for financial aid eligibility.
Regent University will process your loan, while the host school will process your refund.
To begin the approval process, contact the Office of Advising and submit an Academic Petition. Select “Other” as the Purpose of Petition and describe the study abroad program you wish to attend. Include a list of the courses you plan to complete at the host school.
Visiting Students
Students visiting from other schools must work with their home institution’s financial aid office to process all financial aid.
The Student Financial Aid Office processes aid for Regent students attending other schools through the Consortium Agreement process described below.
A financial aid consortium is a formal agreement between two or more accredited, Title IV-eligible institutions that allow a student to receive financial aid (such as federal grants or loans) while taking courses at multiple schools. This is especially helpful for students who:
- Enroll at a home school (i.e., Regent University), where they will earn their degree and
- Take additional courses at a host school (another eligible institution).
This agreement permits the student’s enrollment and the associated costs at the host school to be included in his or her financial aid eligibility calculation at the home school.
The Department of Education maintains a school list, which students can review to determine whether a potential host school is Title IV eligible.
When to Use a Financial Aid Consortium
A financial aid consortium is used only for individual students who wish to take courses at another eligible institution and have those courses count toward financial aid eligibility at Regent University.
This process does not apply to:
- Pre-existing agreements between Regent and other institutions, such as articulation agreements or exchange programs.
- Group study abroad experiences managed by Regent, which follow a separate process.
Note: A financial aid consortium is not required when a student: 1) participates in an established program under an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), such as the Virginia Tidewater Consortium, or 2) complete transient courses.
Institutional Scholarships
Please note the following limitations:
- Regent University scholarships, grants, and discounts only apply to courses taken directly through Regent.
- Students cannot use Regent institutional aid at another school, including while participating in a study abroad program.
- If tuition or other charges from the host school appear on your Regent account, they will appear separately and will not be covered by Regent scholarships.
Consortium Agreement Application Process
Students who need a consortium agreement should start early and complete all steps at least 60 days before the semester begins.
Step 1: Request Financial Aid Counseling
- Email the Student Financial Aid Office to schedule a consortium counseling appointment.
- Provide:
- Name of the host school
- Course titles and credit hours
- Start and end dates for each class
- Provide:
- During the appointment, a financial aid counselor will review your eligibility and explain the next steps.
Step 2: Complete the Consortium Agreement Packet
- After counseling, the Student Financial Aid Office will provide a Consortium Agreement Packet.
- Complete the required sections and work with the host school to finalize their portion.
- Return the completed packet to Regent.
Step 3: Review and Approval
- The Registrar’s Office will evaluate the proposed courses for approval.
- If approved, the Student Financial Aid Office will update your cost of attendance and financial aid package accordingly.
Financial Aid Distribution
If Regent University approves your consortium agreement, the Student Financial Aid Office will disburse all financial aid funds to your Regent University student account. If your financial aid exceeds your charges at Regent, the university will issue a refund to you. You are responsible for using those funds to pay tuition, fees, and other charges at the host school.
Approval of Transient Courses
Before enrolling in courses at another institution while actively matriculating at Regent University, students must submit a Transient Credit Request Form. This allows Regent to:
- Evaluate the host school and proposed courses
- Confirm the credits meet the requirements for transfer under Regent’s Transfer Credit policy
Students do not need to submit an Academic Petition or complete a Financial Aid Consortium Agreement for transient coursework. For additional information, contact the Registrar’s Office.
Approval of Transcribed Courses
Students who plan to complete coursework at another institution after beginning their studies at Regent University and intend to transfer those credits back to Regent must submit an Academic Petition to the Office of Advising for review and pre-approval. This allows Regent to:
- Evaluate the host institution and proposed coursework
- Confirm the credits meet the requirements for transfer under Regent’s Transfer Credit policy
- Confirm that the coursework aligns with the student’s degree program requirements
An Academic Petition is required for transcribed courses. Students may also need to complete a Financial Aid Consortium Agreement. Contact the Office of Advising for additional information.
