Teacher Education Department

The elementary and secondary education programs lead to teacher certification in the state of Virginia upon the successful completion of all program requirements including Praxis I, Praxis II, the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) and the Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE). Courses emphasize the skill set needed for effective educators to meet the needs of today’s students as well as preparation needed for students to master the Standards of Learning (SOL).

ATTENTION TEACHER PREPARATION STUDENTS

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will move to accept the Praxis II, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects Assessment (test code 5031) as of July 1, 2014 (computer-based only).  The assessment is taken as one test in four parts:

  • Reading and Language Arts Subtest (code 5032, score 165)
  • Mathematics Subtest (code 5033, score 164)
  • Social Studies Subtest (code 5034, score 155)
  • Science Subtest (code 5035, score 159)

*To pass the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test you must receive a passing score on each subtest.  You must take the full test on your initial attempt.  If after your first attempt you did not pass one of the individual subtests, you may take just that subtest again for a reduced fee.

If you have taken and passed the Praxis II prior to July 1st you do not need to take the new Multiple Subjects Assessment.  If you have not passed Praxis II by that date you will need to take the new test.  If you have questions or concerns feel free to contact me.
