Critical Incident Stress Management

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is an integrative, comprehensive, and timely intervention approach for dealing with the immediate and long term effects of traumatic events. It provides immediate stability and a sense of normalcy to individuals directly impacted by traumatic events. CISM techniques are designed to be utilized during brief, single interactions with individuals following a crisis.

Due to their simplicity and lack of need to diagnose individuals CISM can be utilized by anyone who has received the training regardless of their degree of mental health expertise. As such, these interventions are classified under the category of crisis intervention as opposed to therapeutic techniques. If the individual requires more assistance, they should be referred to an appropriate mental health professional.
