Regent University Student Presented at the ICSSA 2018 Conference in Seoul, Republic of Korea

Mr. Colin DeLeon gave a remote presentation titled, “Blockchain and the Protection of Patient Information: Using Blockchain to Protect the Information of Patients in Line with HIPAA,” at the International Conference on Software Security and Assurance (ICSSA 2018), Seoul Women’s University, Seoul, Republic of Korea on July 26-27, 2018. Mr. DeLeon’s presentation was based off his studies in his Information Systems Security course at Regent University. Dr. Choi, Mr. DeLeon’s instructor, submitted the presentation to Dr. Jungwoo Roo, the conference organizer. Dr. Choi also serves as an ICSSA conference program committee member.
Colin is a junior majoring in Cybersecurity. Before transferring to Regent University, he was majoring in biology with an interest in becoming a physician. His presentation encompassed both areas of interest. Colin stated, “I wanted to see if there was a better way to try and protect patient information.” He feels his courses at Regent University provide him opportunities to connect what he is learning to real world applications. He shared one of his take-aways from his study was, “People are hopeful for the potential that Blockchain has for the future of cybersecurity.”
Colin is grateful to his professors at Regent as he shared, “They help students to grow outside of their comfort zones.” Additionally, the feedback from the conference provided constructive tips for improving his presentation: “My study needs to focus on confidentiality of information as much as integrity.”

Dr. Choi firmly believes students should be provided opportunities to develop their study and writing skills. Additionally, while encouraging them to delve deeper into the fast changing world of technology he strives to provide them opportunities to have their efforts published in international journals or presented at various conferences.
