Regent Law Wins 55th Annual William B. Spong Jr. Moot Court Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 23, 2026) — Regent University School of Law is pleased to announce that its team of Luke Puffer, Maxine Good, and Kellen Hasle, all second-year law students, won the 55th Annual William B. Spong Jr. Moot Court Tournament, hosted by William & Mary Law School.

Advancing through a deep national field during the Feb. 13-14 tournament, Regent defeated UC Davis, Duquesne University, Florida State University, Fordham University, and Cleveland State University in successive elimination rounds, completing an undefeated run to claim the championship title.

The team was coached by Professor Michael V. Hernandez, with additional support from Senior Counsel Laura Hernandez of the Robertson Center for Constitutional Law and third-year student Diana McBride Bloomquist, herself a member of Regent Law’s recent Hicks Thomas National Championship team, alongside faculty and volunteer moot judges who contributed to the team’s preparation.

The Spong Tournament victory continues a season of exceptional performance for Regent Law’s moot court teams, which have secured three championships in four competitions entered thus far this academic year. Two of those championship runs were undefeated, a testament to the shared investment that binds faculty, coaches, and students in the refinement of Regent Law’s advocates.

“I am incredibly proud of this team and the way they prepared, competed, and supported one another throughout the tournament,” said Professor Hernandez. “They were coachable and supported one another throughout the process. We are grateful to the faculty members, coaches, and volunteers who mooted them. We thank the Lord for the opportunity to see their hard work rewarded.”

The continued rise of Regent Law’s advocacy programs is further supported by the Singer Center for Advocacy, an institutional initiative dedicated to expanding training, competition readiness, and experiential formation for student advocates.

Upon learning of the team’s victory, Singer Center founder Randy Singer reflected on the significance of the achievement, noting that as a William & Mary Law alumnus, he regards the Spong Tournament as one of the nation’s most competitive advocacy events and expressed enthusiasm for what lies ahead for Regent’s advocacy programs.

Regent Law will field nine additional moot court teams across seven competitions later this semester.
