Gregory N. Stillman

Managing partner for the Hunton and Williams Norfolk Office, Greg Stillman addressed an audience of students, faculty, and local practitioners at the First annual Regent IPELS banquet concerning issues in patent litigation.

Mr. Stillman has been practicing law with the law firm of Hunton & Williams since 1974, Virginia's largest law firm, with offices in 18 cities around the world and more than 900 lawyers. He currently manages the firm's Norfolk office and serves on the firm's Executive Committee.

During his career, Mr. Stillman has tried more than 100 jury trials, ranging on issues from corporate governance, antitrust, securities fraud, and other business torts. During the past ten years his practice has focused on intellectual property, particularly patent litigation relating to the internet, drugs and medical devices. In 2003, Mr. Stillman represented MercExchange, LLC, a Virginia based company, in a patent infringement case against eBay, resulting in a successful jury verdict, and damages of $36.5 million for only 18 months of infringement. The case was appealed, ultimately to the Supreme Court of the United States, and is now back before the District Court on the question of whether MercExchange is entitled to a permanent injunction to stop eBay from selling goods at fixed prices over the internet.

In 1991, Mr. Stillman was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, serving as Virginia State Chair in 1998. Since 1987, Mr. Stillman has been listed in Best Lawyers of America in the areas of Business Litigation, Personal and Product Liability Litigation, Antitrust, and Bet the Company Litigation. For several years running he has been identified in Virginia Business Magazine among the Virginia Legal Elite, in Virginia Super Lawyers, and in Chambers USA. From 1990-92, Mr. Stillman served as Chairman of the Virginia Beach School Board.
