Counseling Appointments
All students should schedule an appointment with the Office of Career & Alumni Services. Due to NALP regulations, first-year students cannot receive one-to-one assistance until November 1. The purpose of this initial meeting is to provide students with information about our services and about the legal employment process. Additionally, this provides our office with the opportunity to meet students one-on-one and learn about their career goals. Additional appointments may be scheduled by students or alumni, as needed. Follow-up appointments are often scheduled for résumé or cover letter review, to discuss interview skills, career options or various aspects of the job search. If you have "quick questions," appointments are not required.
Mock Interviews
Students who have concerns about their interview techniques may want to consider scheduling a mock interview. You may find that you are doing a better job than you thought and thus your confidence will be reinforced. Or, if there is a concern, you can work on a solution to improve your interviewing style.
Workshops and Seminars
Workshops and seminars on a variety of topics related to job search, interview skills and career options for lawyers are scheduled throughout the year. A calendar of these events is available in the Career and Alumni Services Office at the beginning of each semester, published in The Ladder and posted on the bulletin boards.
Reciprocity
If you are job searching in another geographic location, the use of another law schools' career services office may be available to you. Reciprocity exists with most other ABA-accredited law schools. Students or alumni wishing to utilize the resources of another career services office, need to let us know in sufficient time for us to make the request and receive a response.
Résumé Forwarding Service
Each year we contact prospective employers throughout the United States and invite them to recruit on campus. Most employers limit their on-campus visits to those schools where they have had past success. Consequently, since Regent University is still a young school, many employers do not schedule interviews at the school, but the number continues to grow each year. Many other employers have indicated an interest in receiving résumés from our students. To facilitate the application process with these employers, résumés of interested students are forwarded, collectively, on an assigned date in the fall.
Notebooks containing the firm resources are available with other binders in the cart. Read these firm résumés carefully to determine if you have an interest and meet the stated requirements.
Job Posting
Job listings received from employers are posted on the Career Services bulletin boards. Job listings are posted immediately upon receipt and the boards can change daily, so students are encouraged to become a "daily board watcher." Students interested in these positions should apply directly to the employer unless it is otherwise noted. However, numerous job bulletins are available in the resource library which, due to space limitations, are not posted. For example, see the five binders containing job bulletins from other law schools.
There are many bulletin boards dedicated to legal career positions located in the Career Services office. Additional information is available (such as a position description or firm résumé) in the binders marked "Firm Résumés" and "On-Campus & Non-Visiting Interviewer Selection." The primary job bulletin board is divided into five sections:
Government Opportunities:
Permanent positions for JD's with federal, state or local government. Also see The National and Federal Legal Employment Report.
Law Firm Positions:
Permanent positions with law firms.
Corporate Positions:
Permanent positions with corporations.
Judicial Clerkship Positions:
Typically one to two-year positions with local, state or federal level judges.
Other Positions:
Permanent positions other than in law firms, corporations and government. A second job bulletin board announces openings for internships, clerkships, associate positions and other law-related opportunities. It also promotes numerous judicial clerkships available nationwide.
Another bulletin board contains information regarding "on-campus interviews" and other organizations "collecting résumés". It also publicizes upcoming seminars, events and current writing competitions.
Two bulletin boards located in the resource library contain information on summer programs, both nationally and internationally.
The last bulletin board is dedicated to our alumni. It contains a U.S. map showing where our alumni are currently located, any "Alum in the News" items and various pictures and cards received from our many graduates.
