As an undergraduate at the University of Richmond, Dr. Lisa Compton set out on a journey to help the hurting through a career in counseling. This journey would eventually take her on a path through various degrees in social sciences, including psychology, religion, clinical social work, and counselor education and supervision. The exposure to these various fields has allowed Compton to learn from professionals with diverse worldviews and has also given her a unique position to mentor other students that desire to pursue a career in counseling.

In graduate school, Compton volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician with Tuckahoe Rescue Squad. It was there that she witnessed the high levels of trauma exposure that rescue personnel experience on a routine basis. In 1996, she began supervision for a license in clinical social work and became certified in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, now known as Critical Incident Stress Management or CISM. Since then, she has had the privilege of working in many clinical settings, including a hospital, private practice, employee assistance program, and church, and providing CISM services to organizations such as firefighters and bank employees.

Compton has provided individual and family counseling, while teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervises counseling interns and supports group leaders, as well as speaks at conferences and workshops.
