For decades, there has been a tension between faith and science – and a distinct challenge of weaving those entities into the classroom and the Christian life.

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, Regent University students, faculty and staff will have the chance to engage in an interactive workshop with two leading experts, Ronald L. Numbers, Hilldale professor of the History of Science & Medicine emeritus at the University of Wisconsin – Madison; and Steven Bouma-Prediger, professor of Religion and associate dean for Teaching and Learning at Hope College.

The workshop is sponsored by the American Association of the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and its Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion (DoSER) grant titled, Science for Seminaries. Regent’s School of Divinity (DIV) was one of 10 seminaries selected to participate in the dialogue.

“Many people look to religious leaders for input on issues relating to science and technology,” said Dr. Diane Chandler, associate DIV professor and project leader for the Science for Seminaries Grant. “The grant aims to equip religious leaders with knowledge of science to address these questions.”

Chandler welcomes students from all disciplines to engage in the conversation on campus.

“In our world, in the church and outside the church, people are asking big questions. And those big questions often involve science,” said Chandler. “We want to lead in the area of equipping our seminarians to be able to speak within their congregations, para-church ministries, and workplace ministries that would be informed and responsive.”
