Uwe C. Scharf, Ph.D.

Regent University’s adjunct professors are rigorously selected so that they help students grow in knowledge and faith. These professors, who teach on a contractual basis, must be dedicated to Christ-centered teaching and learning; have a record of or potential for academic scholarship; possess the ability to teach undergraduate-level and/or graduate-level courses, and embrace Regent’s Identity and Mission statements and subscribe to a statement of Christian faith.

Bio

Dr. Uwe Carsten Scharf was born in Cologne (Koeln), Germany. He is a dual German and American citizen since 2015, and an ordained minister since 1997. Scharf holds a Bachelor of Divinity, a Master of Sacred Theology and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies.

From 1997-2016, Scharf worked as a chaplain and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) supervisor in three major hospitals: Duke, Johns Hopkins and Sentara Norfolk General. In January 2017, he transitioned from full-time chaplaincy to part-time teaching within Regent University’s School of Divinity. Additionally, he serves as the full-time chaplain of a retirement community in Newport News, Virginia.

Scharf is the author of one book and several peer-reviewed articles on the theology of Paul Tillich. In his research, he continues to engage the thought of Paul Tillich and other 20th century, German, Protestant theologians and philosophers.

Scharf has been married to Andrea Brown Scharf since March 2016. His daughter, Uma Scharf, graduated with a B.A. in Neuroscience from Colorado College in 2019. Uma is currently doing neurological research at The Johns Hopkins University. Uwe and Andrea are enthusiastic grandparents to three granddaughters and two grandsons.

Scharf is a “Star Trek” fan of all generations. (He loves Capt. Picard.) He also enjoys driving “classical” Mercedes’ automobiles. Scharf loves people and their life stories, and he is excited to get to know his students and to accompany them on their road toward deeper theological and ministerial insights, and towards the integration of faith and reason.
