This is the second year Tidewater Stage, Regent University’s professional theatre company, will host the humorous and hodge-podge show featuring local musical talent and improvisation performances. The proceeds from the performance will benefit Tidewater Stage’s 2015 performance season.

The first act of the performance will feature love songs from traditional musicals like Annie Get Your Gun, and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.

Norma Bass, a professional Ella Fitzgerald impersonator, will perform tunes from the musical mogul’s classic repertoire.

The second act of the show will feature a Whose Line is it Anyway-type performance from Regent’s Varsity Improv Players (VIPS).

“It’s a fun date-night for Valentine’s rather than a predictable dinner and movie. It’s something different,” said Dr. Eric Harrell, producing artistic director of Tidewater Stage and associate professor in Regent’s School of Communication & the Arts. “And the great thing is that the proceeds go directly to Tidewater Stage.”

Cupid’s Cabaret will launch Tidewater Stage into its third season, and Harrell hopes to continue to keep the quality of his work high to inspire community partners to partner with the theatre.

“Getting past your first season is a big milestone. So many companies get off the ground with a strong start, but it’s hard to piece together your funding because every year you’re starting again,” said Harrell. “I was very confident when we started Tidewater Stage that it would have longevity, but starting to have some years under our belt does feel good as we continue to grow.”

A dessert reception will follow the first act of the cabaret, provided by the Founders Inn and Spa.

“It’s a win-win. These are our talents and gifts and we can make a great Valentine’s weekend. And then they can help us by offering their financial support,” said Harrell. “We have fun with it.”
