Military Spouse of the Year Receives Presidential Scholarship

The Heroes at Home Military Spouse of the Year Awards have become a treasured Hampton Roads tradition honoring the spouses of active duty service members for their support, leadership and dedication to the success of military families. Also continuing in this tradition, Regent University once again awarded Regent's Presidential Scholarship to the 2012 recipient of the award, Toni Hall.

Hall is the wife of Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ronald S. Hall Jr., of the 30th Intelligence Squadron out of Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

At an awards luncheon Thursday, May 10, at The Founders Inn and Spa, Dr. Paul Bonicelli, Regent's executive vice president, presented Hall with the prestigious full-tuition scholarship. Hall will have the opportunity to enroll in Regent's undergraduate school or any of its seven graduate schools.

"Active duty servicemen are honored with all kinds of ceremonies and medals, but spouses usually only get a kiss and a 'thank you,'" said WAVY TV 10 news anchor Tom Schaad, who served as the event's Master of Ceremonies. "They inspire all of us every day."

Hall grew up as an Air Force child and brings an unparalleled level of understanding for families facing separation and loss. On top of raising a teenage son and 10-year-old daughter, she has served as a Key Spouse for her husband's squadron since 2010. In this role, she has volunteered countless hours toward fundraisers, social events and helping other spouses adjust to deployment life. In addition to her work with the squadron, she also volunteers at her children's schools, at her church and as a Girl Scout leader.

"[Military spouses] do things we never thought we could, go places we never thought we would and handle more than we ever thought we could," Hall told The Flagship. "All of it is easier if we realize we aren't alone."

Heroes at Home, a program piloted by The Flagship, the local military newspaper, is the only regional program in the nation recognizing military spouses. It began five years ago in conjunction with the annual celebration of Military Spouse Appreciation Day and is designed to recognize and thank the military spouses who support the active duty members of the Hampton Roads community.

Spouses were nominated by their spouses, family or friends, and the organizations they volunteer for. Finalists were chosen selected for their volunteerism, fortitude on long deployments and their effort to help other spouses.
