School of Divinity Professor Appointed to the Professional Advisory Group of the Hampton Roads Clinical Pastoral Education Center

Dr. Mark Jumper, Regent University School of Divinity’s (DIV) assistant professor and director of chaplaincy & military affairs, Dr. Mark Jumper was recently appointed to the Professional Advisory Group (PAG) of the Hampton Roads Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Center at the Hampton Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center.

The Hampton Roads CPE Center provides official clinical pastoral education training for VA and United States Navy chaplains in Hampton Roads and the organization’s satellite site in San Diego, California.

As a member of the organization’s PAG, Jumper will oversee the quality and maintain the professional standards of the program’s curriculum. His responsibilities will include giving consultation to CPE supervisors, advise its board of directors and potentially give seminars on his area of expertise.

The PAG also oversees the continuation of its accreditation by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), the only CPE training program that the Department of Education (DOE) recognizes.

“This gives me, as a Regent professor, direct involvement and credibility in the CPE community,” said Jumper. “This translates directly into help for our students as they seek training positions, and after graduation, placement positions.”

Regent’s chaplaincy concentration is the largest among DIV’s M.Div. program, with more than 170 registered students. Jumper explained that CPE is increasingly becoming a “core requirement” for all chaplaincy work.

“PAG involvement is an excellent way to get those students better connected, trained and placed,” said Jumper.
