Regent Law Moot Reaches Quarterfinals in Moot Court National Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (February 19, 2021) – Regent University School of Law’s moot court team of Abigail Hilburn, Lexi Overcash, and Bethanie Quigley reached the quarterfinal round of the Moot Court National Championship (MCNC) sponsored by Hunton Andrews Kurth on January 30, 2021. The MCNC is an invitational national championship for schools that ranked in the Top 16 nationally for moot court the previous year. The team that beat Regent Law in the quarterfinal round won the competition.

“Our team represented Regent Law with excellence,” said Professor Michael Hernandez, the team’s head coach and faculty advisor for the Moot Court Board and Trial Advocacy Board. “Their last argument was particularly outstanding. If it had been a real appellate court that was undecided coming into the oral argument, our team’s arguments would have carried the day on the merits. I am proud of our team; it was a pleasure and blessing to coach them.”

This was the second year of competing for Hilburn and Overcash, who were on Regent Law’s ABA regional championship team in 2020. Unfortunately, they were not able to compete at nationals, which were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to this impressive achievement, Regent Law is also proud to announce these recent outcomes:

  • 100% first-time passage rate on the Uniform Bar Exam, Class of 2020
  • 100% first-time bar passage rate in 14 states, Class of 2020
  • 90% first-time bar passage rate on July and September VA Bar Exams, Class of 2020
  • 100% first-time passage rate for Honors, Class of 2020.

“Regent Law’s practical skills training programs, including our nationally recognized Moot Court and Trial Advocacy Teams, are second to none,” said Mark Martin, dean of the School of Law. “Regent students are equipped with the practical skills they need to set themselves apart in the marketplace.”
