Assistant Professor, Business, Leadership & Management
Dr. Donald Joyner graduated Summa Cum Laude from Christopher Newport University with a B.S. in Accounting. Upon graduating from CNU, he entered the full-time MBA program at the College of William & Mary. He graduated with his MBA in 1996, passed the CPA exam in 1997 and became licensed in 1998.
Joyner started his career in accounting working for small CPA firms. It was during this time that he also developed an interest in computers. He was the network administrator at Newport News Waterworks for over 2 years. In 2001, he was elected treasurer of the city of Poquoson, defeating five other candidates. He was reelected in 2005. In 2006, he left his job as treasurer to become CFO of Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit Union.
While treasurer of Poquoson, Joyner was given the opportunity to teach accounting courses at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia, as an adjunct professor. That opportunity led to his life’s calling as an educator. He began planning for a career in academia. In order to make himself as knowledgeable and diverse as possible, he began earning numerous accounting, finance and technological certifications including Certificates in Certified Management Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Government Financial Manager, Chartered Global Management Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Treasury Professional, Certified Systems Information Auditor, Certified Information Technology Professional, and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
In 2007, Joyner was accepted into the accounting Ph.D. program at Virginia Commonwealth University. He graduated in 2011 with a Ph.D. in Business – Accounting with a Minor in Information Systems. Upon graduation, he was hired as an assistant professor of accounting at Norfolk State University, where he served for six years.
During his career, he has served as a visiting professor at Old Dominion University and has taught classes at Christopher Newport University and Virginia Commonwealth University. In July of 2018, he began his current position as an assistant professor of accounting at Regent University.
Raised in the Christian faith, Joyner attends Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown, Virginia. He lives with his wife and daughter in Poquoson, Virginia, where he is a native to the city; can trace his ancestry back many generations. He graduated from Poquoson High School in 1990, 50 years after his maternal grandmother graduated from the same school. She became the first person in her family to obtain a high school education and was fiercely proud of that accomplishment. He states she served not only as his moral compass but also as his inspiration to obtain an education.
Joyner collects sports and space memorabilia, baseball cards, authographs and railroad sets. He enjoys putting models together as well as jig saw puzzles. He loves Ford Mustangs; has only driven Mustangs for the last 20 years.
