Twenty years ago, Pastor Paul's church was nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he presides over a megachurch of thousands. Today should be a day of celebration – the church has paid off their mortgage! But Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundations of his church, community and home. Backed by a full gospel choir, The Christians is a rousing, soul-searching new play about how faith can unite – or divide – a community.
“A mesmerizing drama…a terrific play about the mystery of faith” – The New York Times
The Christians is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

The 39 Steps is a fast-paced whodunit that plunges you into the world of Richard Hannay who is forced to go on the run after aiding a mysterious woman connected to an international spy ring. Train chases, plummeting planes and old-fashioned romance lead to a death-defying finale as four actors play over 150 zany roles.
"Theatre at its finest!... Absurdly enjoyable! This gleefully theatrical riff on Hitchcock's film … is performed by a cast of four that seems like a cast of thousands."- The New York Times
From the novel by John Buchan | From the movie by Alfred Hitchcock

The 39 Steps is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Cover Illustration by Mark Thomas.

We have high hopes for every season, but no one could have predicted what happened last summer: our most critically-acclaimed, highest-grossing, well-attended season to date. The reason? You. Over the past four seasons Tidewater Stage has developed a robust and faithful patron base. We make a pretty good team, don't we? And this season, we're ready to take things to a whole new level.
For our first production of the summer, Hitchcock meets hilarious in the comic thriller The 39 Steps. This ingenious spoof of the classic Hitchcock film features on-stage train chases, dive bombing airplanes and a ridiculously talented cast of four actors playing over 150 zany roles! The 39 Steps ran in London's West End for nine years, making it the fifth longest-running play in the history of London theatre. It ran for 771 performances on Broadway, has been revived twice Off-Broadway and has been produced in over 20 languages. Yep, it's that good. A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps is pure theatre magic.
How do we follow up the blockbuster success of last season's Freud's Last Session? With the fascinating new play The Christians. Pastor Paul has grown his modest church into a megachurch of thousands, but his shifting views on the nature of salvation may prove a leap of faith too great for his faithful flock. Backed by a live Gospel choir, The Christians is both epic and intimate, a gripping portrait of the moments that define who we are and what we believe. For believers and non-believers alike The Christians is a "terrific new play about the mystery of faith" (The New York Times).
It's going to be another amazing season at Tidewater Stage. We'll see you in the theatre!
