Our writing coaches offer guidance for each stage of the writing process for all of your writing assignments, including research papers, book reports, case studies, article reviews, discussion board postings, and reflective journals.

We can help you conceptualize, draft, organize and fine tune your writing assignments, and we are available to help you from beginning to end with the following needs:

Higher Order Concerns: Higher order concerns are what faculty deem the essential components of any academic essay, which include the following:

  • Establishing a clear and concise thesis sentence (or central guiding principle for non-research essays)
  • Providing effective supporting paragraphs for the thesis
  • Ensuring argumentative support is derived from research conclusions
  • Organizing and structuring the essay
  • Identifying and avoiding plagiarism

Lower Order Concerns: Lower order concerns, while important, are deemed secondary in the hierarchy of critical needs. They include the following:

  • Appropriate academic voice and style
  • Proper grammar (i.e. subject-verb agreement, incorrect word usage)
  • Correct and consistent punctuation (i.e. comma splices, run-on sentences, sentence fragments, semi-colon usage)
  • Formatting needs (i.e. APA, MLA, Turabian, Chicago-style, APSA)
  • Citation practices (parenthetical v. footnoting)
  • General proofreading needs and strategies

Presently, we do basic work on resumés/cover letters, but for more complete assistance, please contact the Center for Student Development resumé help page.
