Study Abroad Trip: Literary England and Scotland

Regent University's College of Arts and Sciences with the Office of Global Affairs is delighted to offer a Study Abroad Trip to London, England; Edinburgh, Scotland; and several other cities and locales important to British literature, including Oxford, Haworth, York, the Lake Country, and the Border Lands. Students will visit historic sites and enjoy guided, educational tours of important cathedrals, castles, and colleges.

One special topics literature course will be offered in conjunction with the trip—English 475, "Literary England and Scotland," which will be taught on site and online by Dr. Peter Fraser. Students will have the opportunity to study and interact with great literature in its own cultural context, while exploring many of the marvels of both England and Scotland.

Participants will visit:

  • Westminster Abbey
  • Globe Theater
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • British Museum
  • Haworth
  • The Lake Country
  • Hadrian’s Wall
  • Edinburgh Castle
  • Loch Ness
  • Tantallon Castle
  • Yorkminster Cathedral
  • Magdalen College, Oxford

This trip is being offered to on campus and online students; however, it may also be taken without the course work by family members and friends interested in the cultural experience if space is available.

Flight Arrangements:

Because this trip is available to online students who live in various parts of the country, air travel is not included in the trip costs. Participants who need help identifying the best flight options can email the trip supervisor for such advice. Participants will be asked to meet in London at a designated time and place on Sunday, June, 15, 2013. Detailed information forthcoming.

London Travel:

London tube passes will be given out upon arrival for ordinary subway travel around town. Travel from London to other planned venues will likewise be provided via private van, train, or tube.

Cost: $1600 w/o credits

Above stated prices include:

  • Lodging at comfortable Bed and Breakfast hotels
  • All breakfasts

  • Professional Tours and Entry at all designated sites
  • One group dinner
  • Cab stipend to/from airport

Above stated price does NOT include:

  • Airfare to and from London
  • Course credit costs which will vary per participant
  • Lunches and dinners
  • Additional travel insurance (if not part of existing policies, it can be purchased through On Call International [approx. $55.00-$100.00]—required of all participants)

Passport Information:

Valid Passports are required for travel in England and Scotland. Proof of a valid passport must be provided by May 2, 2013.

Health Advisory & Special Accommodations:

All international programs can be rigorous, and some of the events may require reasonably demanding physical activities; therefore, participants should possess the ability to

  1. Walk one mile without rest
  2. Stand for 30 minutes without sitting
  3. Climb three flights of stairs without assistance
  4. Hear group instructions
  5. Read and understand written instructions and signs
  6. Step in and out of busses or shuttles

Regent University may be unable to provide special accommodations for people with disabilities. If someone needs accommodation or assistance, that person must bring a companion/assistant at full price. Also, those who have a health or mental condition that may interfere with participation in program activities, need to consult with their physician to determine if they are able to participate in a physically demanding study abroad program. Cancellation & Refund Policies: $250 registration deposit is non-refundable. All other payments will be refunded in full if cancellation occurs on or before April 11, 2013. Partial refunds may be granted after the April 11 deadline if alternate participants can be registered and processed.

Minimum and Maximum Number of Participants:

Note that the minimum number of study trip participants is 10 and the maximum number is 12. The trip will be cancelled should the number of registrations not reach the minimum by the end of the day, April 11, 2013. All registrations will be processed on a first come first served basis. In case of trip cancellation, all payments will be refunded at 100%. The refund will not, however, apply to or include the travel insurance through On Call International.
