Each year, Regent University and the School of Education honor local teachers by hosting Salute to Teachers. The area's top public and private school educators will be recognized during the 19th annual event. The event is invitation only* and will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 at The Founders Inn and Spa in Virginia Beach.

What to expect during the Salute to Teachers event

Salute to Teachers is a two and a half hour evening event.  Hors d’oeurves are served and there is time to mingle with colleagues while you register. Dinner and dessert are then served in one of the beautiful ballrooms at the Founder’s Inn. During dinner, Kindred Vision will provide music. This year's speaker will be 2017 Virginia State Teacher of the Year Dr. Toney McNair, Jr.

Teachers will be honored on stage with a certificate of achievement and 25% scholarship to the School of Education, they will also be entered in a door prize giveaway from our sponsors and one lucky teacher will be drawn to win a 100% scholarship to the Regent School of Education (view tentative schedule).

*If you are a Teacher of the Year or principal from a Region II school and have not received an invitation by mail, please contact us.

Workshop Description:
Performance-based Assessment for the Classroom: Practices for Promoting and Measuring Student Learning

In this session, we'll explore the potential that performance-based assessments have to engage students in the application of content knowledge and skills in authentic situations. We'll look at principles for effective performance assessments and explore a framework to facilitate the planning and developing of effective assessments. We'll also examine how to develop high-quality scoring rubrics that align with performance assessments or as stand-alone rubrics that can be used with general classroom tasks.

By day's end, participants in this session will:

  • understand where and how performance assessment and scoring rubrics fits within the Virginia standards-based system
  • be able to use an assessment planning framework for designing or modifying performance assessments and scoring rubrics for classroom, school or district uses
  • Be able to use rubrics for student feedback and learning
  • Be able to incorporate the use of scoring rubrics in student evaluation and grading
