Church Education Initiative Course Offerings & Descriptions
CEI is currently offering the following classes for the academic year 2010-2011. The curriculum with specific classes and class sequence is decided upon based on consultation with our CEI church partner. Additional courses are in development and can be made available to CEI church partners as indicated by specific needs and vision.
DCAT100 – Studying the Bible for All Its Worth: How can I get the most out of my study of the Bible and teach others this skill? This course assists students in learning to study the Bible, to maximize its meaning and application for living. Focusing on observation, interpretation, and application, the student will gain mastery in Bible study tools and techniques. It will introduce the student to biblical languages and provide tools and hands-on instruction for using a variety of Bible study resources - electronic and traditional.
DCAT110 – Understanding the Old Testament Scriptures: What are the major themes of the Old Testament and what significance do they have for today? This course serves as a basic overview of themes, perspectives, and significance of every book in the Old Testament, with a concentration on developing the books' particular messages. Upon completion of this course, the student should have more than just a passing familiarity with the context and purpose of each division of the Hebrew Bible and a firm understanding of the content and purpose of each book.
DCAT120 – Understanding the New Testament Scriptures: What are the major themes of the New Testament and what significance do they have for today? This course serves as a basic overview of themes, perspectives, and significance of every book in the New Testament Canon, with a concentration on developing the books' particular messages. Upon completion of this course, the student should have more than just a passing familiarity with the origins of Christianity, a working knowledge of the Gospels, Epistolary Writings and Revelation and their function within the earliest church.
DCAT130 – Foundations of Theology: How should the Bible inform my everyday faith and what I believe? This course will help ministers develop skills for developing a Christian framework for theological thinking. It will help students construct a solid foundation for thinking theologically about everyday Christian life. It emphasizes the role of scripture in theology while also pondering various other theological sources and examining the various ways that theological sources are used and misused. This course endeavors to enable people to think theologically and to construct a biblical worldview that makes the Christian’s witness relevant in today’s society.
DCAT150 – Theology of Ministry Leadership: What is biblical leadership and how can I lead effectively in the church? This course helps students think theologically about their calling to lead. The course will help students develop biblical leadership based on a servant-leadership model.
DCAT160 – Effective Ministry Communication: Ministry rises and falls on the minister’s ability to communicate. What can I do to multiply the effectiveness of my preaching and teaching ministry? This course will help students develop useful skills for preaching and preparing biblical sermons. This course will help students understand methods for delivering clear and articulately crafted sermons.
DCAT161 – Discovering My Divine Calling: This course guides students through a process of spiritual discovery, enabling them to peel off the masks that often cover the true, powerful self in Christ. This course includes fundamentals of spiritual formation and self-discovery as means to discerning the calling of God. Then, it builds upon that foundation, looking deeper into who and what one is called to do in Christian service to the church and/ or society.
DCAT170 – Strategic Ministry Planning for Advancing Ministry: It is often said that “if I fail to plan, I plan to fail.” What are the essential skills necessary for effective strategic planning in ministry environments? This course will help church leaders understand and develop skills in strategic planning. Also, students will learn skills for fundraising and skills for writing grants to support their areas of ministry.
DCAT175 – Fundamentals of Church Administration: How can I be an effective steward of the human and physical resources that God has given me to be fruitful in ministry? This course will introduce students to basic legal and administrative requirements related to successful church administration. The course will explain different successful leadership styles and help students to discover tools for intentional and purposeful ministry leadership.
