M.Ed. — K-12 Special Education (Licensure)

The Master of Education in K-12 Special Education (with licensure) is an online program designed for individuals seeking K-12 teacher licensure with endorsement in special education as well as current special educators seeking further training. Coursework is taught from a Christian perspective and will increase your understanding of special education laws and introduce you to best practices in disability services, teaching gifted students, addressing behavior disorders and using assistive technology. Application Process – Master of Education (M.Ed.)

Step 1: Application & Application Fee
Submit your application using our Regent University Online Application.

Pay the $50 application fee online during the application process.

Step 2: Submit your Unofficial College Transcripts
Regent University's Office of the Registrar is requesting your official transcripts from your degree-granting institution, which indicates successful completion of a bachelor's degree program. We are able to examine and view your unofficial transcript in order to gain you an admissions decision. Please submit your unofficial transcript to our Admissions Office by email to apply@regent.edu using the subject line: SOE Master's Application Pieces.

Step 3: 400-word Writing Sample
Writing samples are evaluated using the ETS Criterion Service. Submit a single Criterion writing sample using the directions below. Multiple Criterion writing samples will not be considered.

  1. Visit http://criterion.ets.org.
  2. Click "Create Account."
  3. Fill in your account information (Access Code: 26KP - QM6A).
  4. Click "Submit."
  5. Click "OK."
  6. Fill in your new User Name and Password under "Returning User."
  7. Click "Sign In."
  8. Click "School of Education" under "Classes."
  9. Choose the "Assignments" tab.
  10. Choose one of the three writing sample topics provided by clicking on "Start Response." You will be provided with the question pertaining to the topic once you begin the timer for the essay.
  11. Click "OK" to acknowledge you are ready to begin your writing sample.
  12. Read the instructions for submitting your essay. Please keep in mind that you have 40 minutes to complete your writing sample and the timer begins as soon as you click "Start Response." You will receive a warning when 10 minutes remain on the timer.

Step 4: VCLA & Praxis Scores
The following assessments meet the requirement for the prescribed test for entry into a Virginia teacher preparation program. Please choose from one of the following options and submit passing scores directly to Regent University. Regent ETS code: 5135

  • Option 1: Passing the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) (Reading and Writing) individually or with a composite score of 470 AND passing the Praxis I-Mathematics(10730/5730) individually with a score of 178 (if taken on or prior to December 31, 2013) or the new Praxis Core-Mathematics (5732) individually with a score of 150 (if taken on or after January 1, 2014).
  • Option 2: On or prior to December 31, 2013, passing the Praxis I (Reading-178, Writing-176, Mathematics-178 or Composite-532). On or after January 1, 2014, passing the new Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Reading-156, Writing-162, and Mathematics-150).
  • Option 3: Qualifying SAT or ACT scores
    • The VDOE board has approved the following scores:
      • SAT taken prior to April 1, 1995 — a score of 1000 on the SAT with at least 450 on the verbal and 510 on the mathematics test
      • SAT taken after April 1, 1995 — a score of 1100 on the SAT with at least 530 on the verbal and 530 on the mathematics test
      • ACT taken prior to April 1, 1995 — a composite score of 21 with the ACT mathematics score no less than 21 and an ACT English Plus Reading score no less than 37
      • ACT taken after April 1, 1995 — a composite score of 24 with the ACT mathematics score no less than 22 and an ACT English Plus Reading score no less than 46

Step 5: Admissions Interview
If an interview is necessary, the admissions office will contact you to schedule an appointment. The interview can be conducted on campus or over the phone and typically takes about 20 minutes.

Important Information 

Background Check: In addition other program requirements, there are several requirements that students in initial licensure programs must satisfy because the program includes direct contact with students in field experiences. One of these requirements is a background check. Regent University School of Education has entered into an agreement with Certified Background/Castle Branch (CB), a private vendor that conducts background checks for many universities and educational institutions. First Aid, CPR, AED Training: Documentation that verifies completion of certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED). The certification or training program shall be based on the current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
