Bio

Professor Michael Ponton is currently appointed as a professor of education at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and has published extensively in the field of self-directed learning where his interests include human agency, personal initiative, autonomous learning and self-efficacy. Before coming to Regent, he was an associate professor of higher education and senior research and development engineer at the University of Mississippi. Prior to full-time life in academe, he was a National Aeronautics & Space Administration aerospace engineer and conducted experiments in supersonic aeroacoustics.

Awards

International Society for Self-Directed Learning Award of Gratitude, 2017, for service as the 2016 Guest Editor of the International Journal of Self-Directed Learning.


Regent University Faculty Award for Excellence, Fall 2016, for outstanding contributions to scholarship at Regent University.


Malcolm Knowles Memorial Self-Directed Learning Award, 2015, for significant lifelong contributions to the field of self-directed learning.


International Society for Self-Directed Learning Outstanding Service Award, 2014, for service on the editorial board of the International Journal of Self-Directed Learning.


International Society for Self-Directed Learning Exceptional Service Award, 2011, for service on the editorial board of the International Journal of Self-Directed Learning.


Regent University Faculty Award for Excellence, Spring 2010, for outstanding contributions to service at Regent University.


Autonomous Learning World Caucus Gary J. Confessore Award, 2010, for significant contributions to the advancement of learner autonomy.


Association for Educational Communications and Technology Design and Development Outstanding Book Award, 2009. Best in category for the 2008 book titled Distance Learning in Higher Education: A Programmatic Approach to Planning, Design, Instruction, Evaluation, and Accreditation by A. P. Rovai, M. K. Ponton, and J. D. Baker.


National University Telecommunications Network Best Research Paper Award, 2006. Best research paper of the year based upon a national competition for the article titled "An Exploration of Attitudinal and Situational Factors Related to Intrinsic Motivation and Autonomy in Teacher Education Students" by A. P. Rovai, M. K. Ponton, M. G. Derrick, N. E. Rhea, and J. S. Flannagan.


University of Mississippi School of Education Outstanding Faculty Researcher, 2003, for outstanding record of publication for the academic year 2002-2003.


NASA Langley Research Center Certificate of Appreciation, 2001, for efforts leading to the successful demonstration of advanced noise reduction technologies for aircraft applications.


The George Washington University, 1999, for doctoral dissertation defended with distinction.


NASA Langley Research Center Turning Goals Into Reality Award, 1999, for performance as a member of the Advanced Subsonic Technology Engine Systems Noise Reduction Team.


Langley Research Center Facility Safety Head of the Third Quarter, 1997, for recognition of duties performed as the Facility Safety Head of the Langley Jet Noise Laboratory.


NASA Langley Research Center Superior Accomplishment Award, 1997, for contributions resulting in the successful modification of the Low Speed Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel.


NASA Langley Research Center Performance Award, 1996, for contributions resulting in the enhancement of the research capability of the Jet Noise Laboratory.


NASA Agency Group Achievement Award, 1993, for performance as a member of the Supersonic Jet Noise Reduction Team.


NASA Langley Research Center Superior Accomplishment Award, 1991, for the identification of nonlinear interactions in supersonic free jet flows.


NASA Agency Group Achievement Award, 1989, for performance as a member of the B-1B Engine Nozzle Sonic Fatigue Team.


NASA Langley Research Center Group Achievement Award, 1988, for performance as a member of the Supersonic Twin-Jet Resonance Research Team.
