Bio

Dr. M. Gail Derrick received her Doctor of Education Degree in Higher Education Administration in 2001 from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She earned her M.A. in Education and Human Development with an endorsement in Secondary Administration also from The George Washington University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with an endorsement in General Science and Pre-Algebra from Virginia Wesleyan College.


 She was previously with Virginia Beach City Public Schools as a middle school science teacher, coordinator of middle school science, administrative coordinator in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the Regional Director for Academic Affairs for Troy State University, Atlantic Region.


Derrick has presented at local, national and international conferences, and has co-chaired national and international conferences. She is a reviewer for journals and textbooks, and served on committees and boards including the Fulbright Board of Directors, Pharrell Williams FOHTA, Abukloi Board and the VDOE Adult Advisory Committee.


Derrick participated in the 2009 Búsquedas Investigativas: Investigación De La Práctica Educativa Cubana (Academic Explorations: Researching Cuban Educational Practices) trip to Cuba as part of an educational group collaborating with Cuban educators to facilitate mutual understanding of the teaching and learning process. She also participated as a Fulbright Specialist in fall 2010 to train Hungarian educators in American pedagogy for teaching at-risk and high-needs Roma students with a limited educational foundation.


Derrick’s research interests are self-efficacy and adult learning including the factors associated with learner autonomy. She is also interested in creating environments conducive to learning and facilitating learner autonomy in an online setting as well as the role of culture in teaching and learning.
