The Master of Arts in Theatre program allows teachers and artists to complete the degree online. The program, presented from a Christian worldview, will train you with skills, insight and knowledge for a successful career as a theatre teacher, as well as other positions in professional theatre productions, the academy and ministry. Through this challenging program, you will focus on theatre teaching methods, character development, analyzing live theatrical performances and dramaturgy. Advance further by attending an optional on-campus summer intensive (3- or 6-week residency) in Virginia Beach.

  • Explore the functions within a theatrical organization such as assisting in season selection, audience education and audience development.
  • Choose courses from story structure and playwriting to theories of acting and directing, according to your area of interest.
  • Learn how to analyze written dramatic texts for film, television or theatrical production.
  • Examine theatre in the church, such as architecture and design and actor/audience relationships.

Admissions Process:

 Step 1: Application

Submit your application using our Regent University Online Application.

Note: If you are unable to complete our application due to a disability, please contact our Admissions Office and an admissions representative will provide reasonable accommodations to assist you in completing the application.

Step 2: Application Fee

Option 1: Pay the $50 nonrefundable application fee online during the application process via our Miscellaneous Payments Form, or by check or money order mailed to Regent University, Enrollment Support Services, 1000 Regent University Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23464.

Option 2: Attend a graduate School of Communication & the Arts on-campus or online information session to learn how to streamline your application process, discover financial aid resources and waive your $50 application fee. RSVP Today!

Step 3: Submit your Unofficial College Transcripts

Regent’s Office of the Registrar is requesting your official transcripts from your degree-granting institution. We are able to examine and view your unofficial transcript in order to gain you an admissions decision. Please submit your unofficial transcript to our Admissions Office by email to apply@regent.edu using the subject line: COM Master's Application Pieces.

Step 4: Writing Sample

Submit electronically to an admissions counselor at apply@regent.edu using the subject line: SCA Master's Application Pieces.

In 750-1000 words, please write an essay about yourself, including your academic, professional and spiritual journeys, and explain why you want to pursue the M.A. in Theatre. In your essay, discuss your personal, professional and spiritual goals. How do you think this degree will prepare you for the theatre work God has planned for you? Write in a professional manner as we will evaluate this essay as your writing sample for admission.

At the bottom of your essay, please include the contact information (phone number, email and title) for two professional or educational references. These should be people who would be willing to provide our faculty with a verbal recommendation should they need to be contacted.

Step 5: Current Résumé

Provide a professional résumé of employment and accomplishments. Email to apply@regent.edu using the subject line: SCA Master's Application Pieces or fax to 757.352.4394.
