Steel Magnolias Opens on the Regent Stage

By Amanda Morad | September 20, 2013

Steel Magnolias opens Friday, Sept. 20, in the Studio Theatre.

In the story that inspired the award-winning movie, six women converge in Truvy's beauty salon in Regent University's production of Steel Magnolias, opening in the Studio Theatre Friday, Sept. 20, at 7:30p.m.

The beauty parlor is often a woman's sacred place where men dare not tread and where women can share life's triumphs and tribulations. In Steel Magnolias, it's practically the only thing keeping them all together. According to NY Daily News, through "sharp, funny dialogue," this hair-do sisterhood deepens the bonds they hold dear.

"I love both the humor and the heart that makes Steel Magnolias shine," said director Mark Paladini, professional-in-residence in the School of Communication & the Arts. "I love the way the community comes together to help each other in stressful circumstances."

Steel Magnolias runs Sept. 20-22 and 26-29 in the Studio Theatre with showings at 7:30p.m. Friday through Sunday and 2:30p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

"Robert Harling, the playwright, has such a great ear for the dialogue of these women," Paladini said. "Clearly, most of the characters were based on his family and friends."

Many people are more familiar with this story because of the hit 1989 film starring Julia Roberts and Sally Field, but according to Paladini, that's not exactly the story that's told on stage.

"The play works much better than the film, because it exists in a place where no men dare to enter: Truvy's beauty shop," he explained. "I think a lot of the dialogue is made possible because it's a group of women who don't have their guard up the way they might if men were present."

He also noted that while the play is more comedic than the movie, it's also even more moving. "Bring tissues!" he warned.

Three of the six actresses will be performing their MFA thesis role in this production. Alicia Bonham as Annelle, Beth Litwak as Clairee and Hogen Miller as Shelby are performing their roles in partial fulfillment of their MFA thesis.

Purchase tickets at the Box Office.
