Career Services Preps Students for Success

Regent University's Career Services has been busy connecting students and employers in the Hampton Roads, Va., region this year. Many of those connections came to fruition at the "Leaders with Heart" Career Fair, hosted by Career Services on Monday, Feb. 11.
Undergraduate and graduate students came out to present their resumes and talk with local companies and organizations from the corporate, health, hospitality and non-profit sectors. Many business owners were excited to return this year because of their positive experience with Regent hires in the past.
"The Career Fair gives us access to top notch talent for positions in our company that are hard to fill," said Vince Callahan '86 (Education), owner of Mobile Mental Health, LLC. "We hired three students last year and they've been great. I come to Regent before I look anywhere else."
Other local and national businesses present included Enterprise Holdings, Hampton/Newport News Community Services, and Geico.
"I really enjoyed this career fair; it helped me really see what organizations are out there, what organizations are hiring, and how they can help me reach my career ambitions in the future," said College of Arts & Science student, Jennifer Helbig. "I really felt like I got my name out there and got to engage with several different organizations."
But events like this are only part of what Career Services does to help students achieve their future career goals. "We're broadening the scope of our online job board called CareerLink so that we can provide opportunities for students in their home countries," reported Saranette Williams, director of Career Services. Already, students have been placed in positions in Kuwait and Israel, with many international opportunities presenting themselves regularly.
Williams and her team have also scheduled mock interviews for students this semester. For School of Divinity students, these interviews will take place during Modular Week, March 4-8. For all other students, including distance students, mock interviews will be held March 20-21.
Distance students will have the opportunity to connect face-to-face with interviewers via the web. "It's important to us that the same thing we are offering on campus we can offer distance students as well," Williams noted.
Career Services also hosts a variety of workshops throughout the year, with a new series named every two months. For February and March, the series "Be Equipped" will offer workshops on LinkedIn, Facebook etiquette, and even proper business handshakes. A luncheon etiquette workshop is also scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26.
